This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

The UNV Post is paid and fulltime, and UNV work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Communication Team based in New York.

Duties of the UNV include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in monitoring media coverage of mine action and international relations issues.
  • Distribute relevant articles to key partners
  • Establish and maintain a mine action video library
  • Assist with media outreach
  • Assist in creating graphic-design related materials
  • Assist in advocacy and outreach activities to internal and external audiences
  • Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of public information materials, including website content.
  • Assist with the maintenance and help develop UNMAS Social Media tools (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
  • Assist in liaison with public information focal points in HQ specifically related to generating multimedia public information materials.
  • Assist in the preparation of outreach material such as talking points, correspondence and presentations
  • Events and website management, stocking and mailing public information materials.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments: Master's degree in Economics, Social Studies, Finance or closely relevant subject.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Work individually as well as part of a team towards common goals.
  • Fluency in English required
