This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under overall guidance and supervision of the UNFPA Representative and direct supervision of the Assistant Representative, the UNV Gender/GBV Specialist will support the strengthening of capacity of the Gender machinery to better coordinate Gender and GBV intervention. He/she will support the Ministry of Women Affairs and other actors in coordinating all FGM/Child Marriage and Gender activities including the work of the National Steering Committee on Gender. The successful candidate will:

  • Serve as the UNFPA Country Office technical lead on gender programming and support
  • Provide technical support to the National Steering Committee on Gender and FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)
  • Facilitate the review, formulation and enactment process of appropriate legislation on gender and FGM
  • Serve as the technical lead of the UNFPA FGM Programme including the UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM
  • Identify and develop strategic policy and programme intervention in addressing violence against women and girls.
  • Periodically review the National Action Plan on Gender and FGM
  • Monitor the implementation of Gender and FGM activities countrywide
  • Support gender mainstreaming in Country Office activities
  • Provide reports on the implementation of Gender and FGM activities and other reports as programmatically required.
  • Facilitate meetings of the committee on the Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Acts 2013 and other coordination platforms on Gender and FGM.
  • Enhance sharing of information on results and identify enabling factors for the implementation of the Gender Communication Strategy.
  • Development of guidelines for disbursement of funds to support victims of violence and their families
  • Facilitate the update of the National plan of action on Gender 2012 – 2016, the National Plan of Action for the Elimination of FGM/C 2012 – 2016 and other relevant policies, plans and guidelines.
  • Support resource mobilization activities for the gender programme, the implementation of the National Plan of Action on Gender Based Violence as well as the National Action Plan on Female Genital Mutilation/C.
  • Serve as the technical lead of the UN Gender Working Group and coordinate its activities
  • Facilitate evidence gathering and dissemination on gender.
  • Develop, manage and enhance quality partnerships with national partners, donors and other relevant groups on gender
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Representative

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • University degree in Law or other relevant field with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience ;

Required experience:

60 Months

Experience remark:

  • Knowledge of gender and Gender Based Violence issues and problematic
  • Sound knowledge of the specificities of processing GBV cases by Justice and police
  • Significant experience in project management in developing countries ;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English. ;
  • Proficiency in using computer applications MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, internet and e-mail;
  • Demonstrated integrity, leadership, and communication skills; Pragmatic, autonomous and deadline-oriented work-style ;

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and positive attitude towards working with host country national staff, government officials and personal sensitivity and commitment to the values and principles of volunteerism

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
