This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the supervision of the Head of Research for West and Central Africa, the UN Volunteer Specialist will execute the following tasks:

Project implementation:

  • Organize national and regional workshops on topical issues such as irregular migration, transnational organized crime (TOC), illicit trafficking etc.;
  • Support the development and implementation of national strategies to TOC and illicite trafficking, with a particular focus on the Sahel;
  • Contribute to the development of the workplan, the methodology and the structure of the research paper in consultation with the senior consultant, the direct supervisor, UNODC ROSEN TIP/SOM Unit under overall guidance of UNODC HQ;
  • Contribute to the development of research paper (modus operandi and state responses) on transnational organized crime, TiP/SOM, terrorism, corruption and money-laundering in the West African region
  • Support any other research related activities implemented by the R&A section

  • Contribute to the organisation of various R&A activities, field missions, and strategic meetings;

  • Undertake other complementary activities which will support the development of ROSEN Research section activities as may be required.

Research :

  • Support/participate to field-research on manifestations of illicit trafficking and its links with transnational organised crime and terrorism, as well as States’ responses to the those issues in the Sahel region;
  • Collect and review information from governments, inter-governmental/non-governmental organisations, research institutes, media, UNODC or other UN Offices, and other relevant sources.
  • Monitor national and international online news in the Sahel region and compile irregular migration and migrant smuggling related news clippings on a daily basis;
  • Support all other organised crime and terrorism related research in ROSEN
  • Support research on the links between emprisonement and radicalization in the region;
  • Develop partnerships with U.N. agencies and independent research institutions in the region to promote research in West Africa

Communication:

  • Support raising awareness on TOC and illicit trafficking in the ROSEN region;
  • Draft press releases and web stories;
  • Create and maintain databases on irregular migrant flow and national legal structures on irregular migration and migrant smuggling in the Sahel;
  • Coordinate research and analysis initiatives with UNOWAS, UNOCA and other UN Secretariat presences in West and Central Africa
  • Support media events including press releases, report launches and press conferences.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Law, political or social sciences, public administration or equivalent academic training/education from a recognized university

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

At least three years of relevant, and progressively responsible, work experience preferably in the areas of research and/or law enforcement.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise:

Human rights, Development programme/project administration, Public information and reporting

Area of expertise details:

  • Excellent research and drafting skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and workshop facilitation skills required.
  • Knowledge of West Africa and especially Sahel’s political, social and human rights issues is an asset.
  • Proficiency in all Office-package tools.
