Overview

Support UNEP FI's Climate Team in delivering climate initiatives for COP30.

You have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; A bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, international relations, economics, finance, political science, or related field may be accepted in lieu of high school diploma, provided the candidate has 0 years of experience.
  • At least one (1) year of working experience in climate policy, sustainable finance, or international development.
  • Experience supporting event planning, stakeholder engagement, or drafting policy-related documents is an asset.
  • Demonstrated familiarity of international climate policy frameworks, particularly the UNFCCC process and COP.
  • Understanding of sustainable finance and climate-related financial initiatives, such as the Making Finance Work for Climate Coalition and the Investor Agenda.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to draft briefing notes, event materials, and stakeholder correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and collaborative tools (e.g., SharePoint, Teams).

Result of Service

Through these services, the Individual Contractor will support the Climate Team in delivering an ambitious agenda in the lead-up to COP30 across key initiatives—including Making Finance Work for Climate Coalition and the Investor Agenda. It will help ensure UNEP FI’s continued leadership in advancing a stakeholder-inclusive climate agenda, engaging partners across UN networks such as NZAOA, NZBA, and NZECA. This will require extensive cross-coordination, with the ultimate goal of securing strong UNEP FI positioning within these initiatives at COP30.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 32 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs an individual contractor to assist with preparations for COP30 within various climate initiatives, including Making Finance Work for Climate Coalition and Investor Agenda. This includes supporting preparations of events, position papers and surveys in the run up to COP30 in Belem. Outputs and Deliverables: • Roundtable of the Coalition in September • Enhanced coordination in the process of writing the Coalition’s position paper, both the short and the extended version • The Coalition’s event at PRI in Person • The Coalition’s event at COP30 in Belem • Communication of the Coalition’s activities for website and social media • Aggregation of the data from the Investor Agenda survey and interviews • Compact analysis of the Investor Agenda survey and interviews Specific tasks and responsibilities: The individual contractor will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Climate Teamwork: • Assist with preparations of the Making Finance for Climate Work Coalition virtual roundtable. • Assist with preparations of the Making Finance for Climate Work Coalition position paper – short version intended for the Coalition’s roundtable. • Assist with preparations of the Making Finance for Climate Work Coalition position paper – extended version intended for PRI in Person/COP30 • Assist with preparations of the Making Finance for Climate Work Coalition event at PRI in Person • Assist with preparations of the Making Finance for Climate Work Coalition event at COP30. • Support in drafting UNEP FI external communication on the above Coalition’s activities for website and social media. • Assist with the Investor Agenda survey – communication and results aggregation and analysis • Assist the Investor Agenda by conducting interviews to complement the surveys and preparing the final analysis based on combined findings. • Other tasks as agreed with the direct supervisors. The individual contractor shall be under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI and report directly to the Climate Team Lead.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, international relations, economics, finance, political science, or a related field may be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma, provided the candidate has 0 years of experience. Additional coursework or training in climate change, sustainable finance, or international development is desirable. Experience: At least one (1) year of working experience in climate policy, sustainable finance, or international development. Experience supporting event planning, stakeholder engagement, or drafting policy-related documents is an asset. Prior experience working with or within UN agencies, international organizations, or multistakeholder initiatives is desirable.

Languages

Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
