Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) works with more than 500 banks and insurers with assets exceeding US$170 trillion work together to facilitate the implementation of UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking and Principles for Sustainable Insurance, as well as three UN-convened net-zero alliances. Financial institutions work with UNEP FI on a voluntary basis and we help them to apply the industry frameworks and develop practical guidance and tools to position their businesses for the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI has a 2022-2025 strategy, and it should be reviewed for 2026-2030. For the first phase, UNEP FI needs a consultant to set the current context and future trends through desk research, interviews, dialogues and survey. Those inputs should support recommendations for UNEP FI value proposition, membership review and UNEP FI strategy. UNEP FI needs a consultant to support the secretariat to work on the UNEP F membership strategy and value proposition review. The consultant will be required to engage with UNEP FI’s governance bodies (comprising UNEP FI members from banks and insurers), UNEP FI team members and other external stakeholders via a series of interviews and surveys. The results of the exercise will be an external and internal analysis of UNEP FI’s business, and a well-articulated value proposition for UNEP FI’s key stakeholders and a membership review that will contribute to UNEP FI’s strategy. The work will help UNEP FI to review its offering to members and continue shaping the sustainable finance agenda around the world. Objective: The consultant will support UNEP FI secretariat to engage governance bodies, external stakeholders and make proper analysis, interviews and reports to support UNEP FI strategy, UNEP FI value proposition and UNEP FI project document review and continue to shape the sustainable finance agenda around the world and raise ambitious. Specific tasks and responsibilities: • Prepare desk research and market analysis with similarities, differences, and opportunities (around 10 organizations) • Interview key internal and external stakeholders (around 30-40 interviews) to understand members and key stakeholders’ expectations, selling points and benefits (value proposition) and relevant actors we should be working with (membership review) and key priorities to shape sustainable finance and raise ambition. • Develop a survey to complement the desk research and interviews and share final results and insights • Facilitate a dialogue with UNEP FI team leads, UNEP FI governance bodies (Global Steering Committee, Banking Board, Insurance Board and Civil Society Advisory Board) to discuss findings and recommendations for the membership review, value proposition and implications for UNEP FI’s strategy • Final Report with the results and recommendations for the membership review, a well-articulated value proposition for key stakeholders and implications on UNEP FI strategy to continue shaping the sustainable finance agenda around the world. The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: First university degree in international relations, marketing and communications, business, economics and finance, sustainable development or an environmental field. Professional experience: At least 5 years’ experience in sustainable finance ideally working in financial institutions or in consulting. Experience in project management, conducting interviews, moderating sessions, summarizing insights and outputs and writing reports with key take aways and next steps. Experience of writing/editing technical reports desirable.

Languages

Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Additional Information

Skills & knowledge: • Proven knowledge of the field of sustainable finance is required, understanding of drivers of sustainability in the financial sector. • Skilled in market analysis, interviews, and knowledge management, translating diverse ideas and concepts into tangible recommendations and outcomes • Skilled in facilitating discussions between actors with different points of view and building together insights and recommendations. • Excellent communication skills (listening, spoken and written). • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills. • The incumbent is expected to work independently with minimal supervision and must have significant latitude to be self-directed and be highly motivated. • Problem solving skills are desirable.
