Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 450 banks, insurers, and investors. For over 30 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards, and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.
UNEP FI hosts the Principles for Responsible Banking, a unique framework for ensuring that signatory banks’ strategy and practice align with the vision society has set out for its future in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. Over 300 banks representing approximately 48% of banking assets worldwide have now joined this movement for change, leading the way towards a future in which the banking community makes the kind of positive contribution to people and the planet that society expects.
As the membership continues to grow, UNEP FI needs to have a data management system in place to assist with secure storage of data, and effective data capture and analysis.
UNEP FI needs to put a data management system in place to assist with secure storage of data pertaining to members delivery on their PRB commitments, and effective analysis of this data. UNEP FI therefore seeks a consultant who will be responsible for developing a data management system. Signatory banks are required to report regularly on how they are implementing the Principles for Responsible Banking, the targets they have set, and the progress made, using the reporting and self-assessment template. This should be part of their regular, annual reporting. Key elements have to be assured. Each bank's reporting contributes to the collective progress report published every two years by UNEP FI. Full details on PRB activities can be found here: https://www.unepfi.org/banking/bankingprinciples/
The successful candidate will be in charge of overseeing the data management of the majority of banking-related data within UNEP FI. This includes the establishment and finalization of a data management system that enables deriving intelligence for strategic planning from the data, enables targeted communications to different target audiences, enables an integrated accountability process across the Principles for Responsible Banking and the Net-Zero Banking Alliance and supporting coordinated membership engagement.
The purpose of the data management system is to compile and track reporting and signatory data related to UN Principles for Responsible Banking Signatories, make the data accessible to different internal stakeholders with different rights to access and allow for structured data analysis and data visualization to track progress and implementation of the Principles. Data security is critical. The successful candidate must be able to translate these requirements into an effective data base which makes it easy for team members to access the data in the short and medium term. One important aspect will be the establishment and coordination of data governance processes as well as training of team members, to ensure the installed system is used and integrated into working practices of team members. The data management system should be set up in a way that it can be adapted and responsive to potentially upcoming needs as well as used for next steps in terms of a broader banking data universe cross UNEP FI.
The longer-term vision is to have one overarching data system for working with banks across UNEP FI. In the longer term, the data management system should be designed to be scaled up with a visible interface to banks in the format of a reporting portal that enables banks to report on their activities in the future, which the successful candidate should take into account when developing and maintaining the data management system. The system will also need to be designed to be extended to UNEP FI’s insurance members and supporting institutions in the longer term and potentially be integrated into a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system that still needs to be procured (not in scope of this ToR, but it will be harmonized in the future).
The consultant will carry out the following project tasks as shown below: - Deliver on and finalize all necessary steps of the interim solutions project plan that he has been developing and working on in the past months (a.o.): - Produce an online application form online - Enable sending out automatic letters at certain points in the member’s journey - Develop a dashboard including an overview of every bank’s engagement (WGs, workshops, PRB academy etc.) - Merge with Regional Coordinators and financial databases - Develop a system for the bulk of banking-related data within UNEP FI (incl.
