Result of Service Through these services, the Initiative (through NZAOA) will be able to engage a broad range of asset owners in a climate-ambitious commitment and will be able to communicate on progress and challenges in an effective manner. The services will provide professional internal communication within NZAOA membership, helping to promote the full integration of climate considerations into all aspects of asset owners’ operations and services, and help foster private sector investment in the transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient economy. Finally, the services will help the Initiative to broaden its outreach and preserve its credibility both within UNEP / UN and external to insurers and investors, governments, regulators, private sector and multi- stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 400 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.

UNEP FI needs an experienced consultant to join the FI Communications Team to work on all communication requirements for the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA), including digital, web-based, and paper and currently does not have the relevant professional expertise internally to carry out the stated tasks as shown below.

Communications, marketing, engagement, website development and events are important to help generate awareness, visibility and knowledge, identify and share best market practice and engage financial institutions in actioning UNEP FI’s as well as NZAOA’s initiatives. UNEP FI currently does not have the internal capacity to undertake these communication activities, and hence outside expertise is required for this purpose.

The consultant will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Communications work including key campaigns in 2023.

  • Media & Press: o Conduct media outreach on key projects and events via all channels o Liaise with UNEP head office publications and press team on key launches o Drafting press releases and media advisory notes o Maintain list of press contacts and press engagement o Brief UNEP FI and NZAOA spokespeople for media engagements o Build relationships with key media outlets

  • Social Media & Website: o Update and manage content on the NZAOA website and UNEP FI website o Create content for and manage social media channels in coordination with communications colleagues o Conduct and present web and social media analysis o Write content for all channels on sustainable finance topics (social media, articles, website, newsletters, speeches, video scripts, etc.) o Liaise with the in-house design team for visual identity, social media assets and templates o Create promotional videos for social media

  • Members & Partner channels: o Put together communications packs for Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance members on key launches o Help maintain connection with Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance group, including admin tasks, responding to comms enquiries and organizing regular meetings o Liaise with other UNEP FI-convened net-zero alliances to align on key messaging and media approaches o Engage with partners (such as the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero and the Race to Zero campaign) to ensure accuracy of NZAOA narrative and to amplify NZAOA’s work

  • Webinars & Events: o Serve as the NZAOA focal point for partnered digital events, copy-edit meeting agenda and promote events via best-suited platforms o Assist in preparing speakers for webinars and events, including speechwriting and slide creation as required o Monitor the sustainable finance and COP 28 event landscape, seeking key opportunities to promote the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance projects

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head UNEP FI. The consultant will report to the Climate Change Lead, as a daily supervisor. They will work closely with communications colleagues including the UNEP FI Communications Lead.

Qualifications/special skills Academic background: Master’s degree in communications, marketing, international relations, business, journalism, finance, social sciences, event management, public relations or a related field. A First degree could be taken in lieu of advanced degree provided the selected candidate has 8 years of relevant experience.

Professional Experience: Demonstrated at least 6 years working experience in Public Relations, communications, marketing, journalism and /or events, preferably in a finance-related field. Demonstrated up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media, content marketing and press relations. Demonstrated experience in using webinar and online meeting platforms, event coordination and website updates.

Languages English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Additional Information Special Skills & Knowledge: o Ability to engage senior stakeholders, knowledge of financial landscape and ability to craft, design and create external communications strategy and communications assets of all types (key messages, press releases, social media, website updates, webinars). o Creative and enthusiastic professional with excellent oral and written communications skills, with ability to communicate clearly and succinctly. o Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to develop and execute results-focused communications plans across a mix of channels including events, email, webinars, and online and social media. o Basic understanding of back-end web development is desirable. o Ability to produce communications materials with high-quality visuals. o Knowledge of the finance industry is required; knowledge of sustainable finance and environmental issues would be an asset. o Ability to prioritize multiple activities concurrently in an organized and timely manner with attention to detail. o Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team. o Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations across diverse stakeholders in a multicultural, geographically dispersed, and online environment.
