The Communications & Advocacy Section is responsible for proactively advancing the strategic positioning of UN Women and its mandate through effective outreach through its strategic communications capacity and function. It is at the forefront of UN Women’s work to change attitudes and promote gender equality through all forms of media, to build UN Women’s brand and influence and disseminate its messages.
Under the guidance and supervision of the Chief – Communications and Advocacy, the Deputy Chief – Communications and Advocacy is responsible for providing high level- strategic advice to the Chief, managing UN Women’s media outreach, managing technical communication and advocacy support to regional offices and country offices, with a focus on media outreach and social media.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide high-level strategic support and advice to the Chief – Communications and Advocacy:
- Provide substantive input to the development of the Communication Strategy
- Coordinate development of the annual workplan and budget for the section for the Chief’s review and approval.
- Manage and oversee the implementation of UN Women’s communication activities, including leading day-to-day implementation of the section workplan, setting clear priorities and objectives
- Develop Communications and Advocacy reports and provide inputs to UN Women reports.
- Oversee the branding portfolio
Under the supervision of the Chief, manage and direct the media and social media outreach for UN Women:
- Manage and oversee the implementation of UN Women’s communication activities.
- Coordinate communication activities (media and social media) for the Executive Leadership Team.
- Oversee and manage communication planning and support for relevant high level activities and events.
Coordinate Headquarters communication and advocacy support to regional offices and country offices focusing on media outreach, in close consultation with the Chief:
- Ensure that communication initiatives from different offices in headquarters, regional offices, and country offices are aligned with corporate priorities and provide guidance as needed.
- Oversee the development of guidance and templates for media outreach by offices
- Support ROs in identifying and filling capacity needs to ensure ROs are able to deliver communications and advocacy results.
- Coordinate the activities of the global network of communication officers
Manage Communications partnerships:
- Manage and develop communication to further strategic communication objectives
- Explore the use of new and innovative communication tools and platforms.
Oversee the production of multimedia communication content:
- Ensure quality of production of wide range of high-quality content for corporate channels., including video and editorial
- Oversee the implementation of the web strategy
- Oversee the production of communication materials, including press releases, media advisories, news briefs, fact sheets, videos.
Performance Management:
- Manage the performance of personnel under supervision.
- Provide performance feedback and coaching to personnel under supervision, ensure performance assessment are implemented on time and ensure personnel are fully aware of UN Women accountability frameworks and workplace relations policies.
Other duties as required:
- Perform other duties as required by the Chief.
- Act as OIC and supervise other personnel, as needed.
Key performance indicators include:
- Implementation of section’s annual work plan on time, on scope, on budget;
- High quality advice provided to the Chief in the implementation of integrated communications strategies to advance UN Women’s positioning;
- Successful partnership management in the area of communications and advocacy;
- Increased visibility and reach of UN Women communication in traditional and digital channels.

Required Skills and Experience
Education and certification:
- Masters degree (or equivalent in communication, international development, public relations journalism, social studies, media studies or related fields;
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- At least 10 years of experience in communications and media outreach;
- Experience managing partnerships with traditional and new media;
- Experience managing a multi-cultural team.
- Experience with UN system is an asset.
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English is required;
