Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Director of the Regional Office in Beirut, the UN Volunteer UN Regional Coordination Officer will provide support to the Director of the Regional Office in liaising with the Regional United National Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) to enhance the UN system collaboration and system-wide coherence within the framework of the UN reform, improve UNESCO's representation at the regional level within the UNSDG and support the Organization’s full participation and contribution in UN system action, in coordination with the offices in the region

In this regard, the UN Volunteer will ensure the overall coordination of Regional UNSDG related-issues by:

  • Ensuring the participation of the Regional Office in the coordination systems, processes and meetings of the Regional UNSDG, with partoicular attention to the Regional Collaborative Platforms;
  • Support coordination and liaisoning with United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) Regional Director and related staff based in Amman;
  • Providing support to the Director of Office to strategically position UNESCO as a key partner within the UNSDG and promote integrated approaches with the wider UN system in UNESCO’s fields of competence, including through the elaboration of support material and analysis to be shared with the Regional UNSDG;
  • Supporting the Director of the Office in the review, development and implementation of UNSDG reform initiatives as regards UNESCO through collection, analysis and dissemination of information related to the reform, UNESCO’s involvement in the UNSDG and on UNSDG global collaboration in the region;
  • Providing assistance to the field offices in the region in ensuring UNESCO’s substantial integration in UNSDCFs and appropriate alignment of UNESCO’s country strategies with United Nations Sustainable Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCF);
  • In coordination with the Office’s media and communication coordinator, supporting communication related to UNESCO’s participation in UNSDG regional coordination both within the Regional UNSDG and UNESCO;
  • Contributing to the Regional Office inputs to strategic and programming documents, statutory reports and reports to the Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations ADG/PAX and UNESCO Governing Bodies with regard UNESCO’s involvment in the UNSDG and on UNSDG global collaboration in the region;
  • Supporting cooperation with other regional and interregional organizations as appropriate;
  • Supporting resource mobilization offorts for regional programs of all sectors represented in the Regional office, contacts with potential donors as relevant.

The UN Volunteer works within the framework of UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategies (C/4s), approved Programmes and Budgets (C/5s), the Operational Strategy for the Implementation of Priority Africa and the Priority Gender Equality Action Plan as well as within the framework of international agreed development agendas as Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063 for the Africa region.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in any area of UNESCO’s competencies, international relations, public or business administration, economics or another related field;

Required experience:

60 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least 5 to 7 years of professional work in UN coordination, planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of activities, projects and/or programmes, of which 2 years acquired at international level;
  • Experience with UN coordination mechanisms, familiarity with the work and functioning of international organizations and knowledge of the United Nations common system and reform processes, good understanding of the 2030 Agenda and UNSDG mechanisms;
  • Familiarity with UNESCO’s programmes, structure and priorities;
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • Proven coordination, planning and organization skills within UN coordination mechanisms with ability to establish and follow plans and priorities;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to prepare and draft high-quality documents and reports intended for internal and/or external dissemination;
  • Experience in implementation of UN reform processes;
  • Experience in field operations;
  • Good geopolitical knowledge of the Arab Region;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment of international and national personnel and to adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; and to establish good working relationships with internal and external partners;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness.
