Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean internship is for 6 months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Office Coordinator: - The intern will be responsible for supporting UN-Habitat´s projects in Mexico, which includes assisting with policy analysis and design of strategic UN-Habitat interventions at national and local level, with territorial, gender and human rights crosscutting approaches. - The intern will support project coordinators at the national office. - The intern will be responsible for scheduling activities and reports. - The intern will work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals, to support achievement of project expected results. She/he will be responsible for making records and memories of the events organized by UN-Habitat. - The intern will be responsible for activities like: developing urban and public space diagnosis, policies, strategies, design, architectural plans, participatory workshops, training, and tools; conducting research on urban design and public space and consolidating best practices and case studies and best practices; assisting in the elaboration of urban design documents, guidelines, information materials, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials. - The intern must tailor language, tone and style to assist in establishing connection between UN-Habitat's counterparts in negotiation purposes. - The intern will also be involved in inter-agency initiatives at national areas in which UN-Habitat actively participates, incorporating the UN-Habitat's mandates and principals and developing technical inputs as needed. - The intern will work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team
Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning and/or related areas or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor´s or equivalent) in architecture, urbanism, and/or related areas.
No previous experience is necessary. However, experience and postgraduate studies in the above mentioned areas will be positively valued. Previous experience with the United Nations or other International Cooperation Organizations will increase the score.
Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. . For this internship, fluency in oral and written Spanish is required.
