Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting and Reporting

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

The Consultant is being recruited to provide technical support to UNDRR in preparation for COP 27 and related climate change/DRR activities and UNFCCC processes. This position is located in the UNDRR Regional Office in Arab States based in Cairo, Egypt. This consultancy position is located in the UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States. The consultant will work directly under the Deputy Chief of Office in Cairo.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources, including the incoming COP Presidencies priorities, strategies and plans for COP 27.
  • Reviews climate and disaster risk reduction documents and reports; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
  • Supports and facilitates workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing substantive reports and documents.
  • Supports the development and implementation of the UNDRR COP strategy, including the review and analysis of DRR/climate issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies,
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities, and in-country preparation for and coordination of UNDRR’s engagements in the COP, liaising closely with the UNRC office and core COP team.
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills with track record of research experience is desirable.

Academic Qualifications: - Advanced university degree in business administration, management, Climate Change, environmental sciences economics or a related field is required. - A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Experience: - A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. - Experience in climate change adaptation, DRR or related field is required. - Previous experience in supporting international processes, such as the COP is desirable.

Language: - Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) are required.
