Org. Setting and Reporting The Translator/Interpreter reports to the Senior Legal Officer (Administrative Law) and provides interpretation and translation services within the Department of Legal Affairs, which is counsel for the Respondent before the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal.

Responsibilities Translates and reviews translations of Agency replies to the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal (DT) including motion materials, and related documents from Arabic into English and vice-versa for the Department of Legal Affairs.

Drafts, as requested by supervisor, materials in English and Arabic related to the administration of justice system.

Education Advanced university degree from an accredited educational institution in English or related field;

Relevant qualifications in translation and interpretation.

Job - Specific Qualification Relevant qualifications in translation and interpretation.

Work Experience At least seven years of progressively responsible relevant experience in translation and interpretation work from Arabic to English and vice-versa.

Dedication to the aims and policies of the Agency and the United Nations (desirable).

Familiarity with legal terminology, especially labour and employment law matters (desirable).

Knowledge of Middle East contemporary affairs (desirable).

Languages Excellent command of written and spoken English and Arabic.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Type of Contract: Fixed Term Appointment

Duration of Contract: 3 years including 1 year probation period, with the possibility of further extension, subject to the availability of funds, satisfactory performance and continuing need.

The incumbent may be required to travel in the Agency's area of operations in the Middle East.

The incumbent may be expected to work beyond regular working hours.

This vacancy notice is open to internal and external candidates. Only candidates residing in either Jerusalem, West Bank or Gaza with authorization to work in the duty station at the time of application are eligible to apply. The Agency will not assume responsibility or accountability to support or facilitate the issuance of work permit in Jerusalem, and without a valid work permit, the appointment may be rescinded.

Equivalency: When the minimum requirements are not fully met, the Director of Human Resources may exceptionally substitute part of the unmet requirements with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and progressive relevant work experience.

NB: Work experience alone or formal qualifications with no relevant work experience are not considered an acceptable combination.
