Translator - Interpreter

Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has played a crucial role in supporting agricultural development and food security in Tajikistan. Through collaborative efforts with the government, FAO has implemented projects aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and food security, as well as at promoting sustainable practices and resource management.

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist Governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

The Translator/Interpreter shall operate under the overall guidance and responsibility of the FAO Representative for Tajikistan, in close collaboration with the staff of the Representation including the Technical Officers responsible for project cycle management.

Technical Focus

The Translator/Interpreter will perform a variety of translation activities aimed to assist FAO Tajikistan requiring specialized translation support and will provide interpretation service and the best practices of the Organization. Interpret and translate from to non-FAO Languages a variety of project-related documents and workshops.

Tasks and responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, technical supervision of project LTO and direct supervision of National Technical Officer, in close collaboration with Project assistant, the incumbent will provide the following services:

• Provide National Technical Officer with the written translation from English to Russian, from English to Tajik and from Russian to English; Provide high quality translation within deadlines set, ensuring the adequate use of relevant terminology, in the areas of FAO mandate namely: marketing, agricultural production, land and water (irrigation), climate change, plant production and protection, rural development, food security, food safety, rural development, agricultural investment, livestock production, and animal health; • As a self-revising translator, the incumbent must produce concise and accurate translations in an appropriate style, which will not be subject to further review; • In case FAO or the project stakeholder (Committee of Environmental Protection under the Government of the Tajikistan) will have comments, questions for the translation, the incumbent will address and correct the translated text accordingly without additional payment. • Provide consecutive interpretation from/to Russian/ Tajik and English languages and vice versa during the meeting • Provide written translations (English-Russian-English; Russian-Local-Russian;etc), project proposals a wide variety of texts dealing with agriculture and related subjects as well as administrative, financial and legal matters, from Russian-English and vice versa, and from English official local language of the country (Tajik, and vice-versa. • As a self-revising translator, the incumbent must produce concise and accurate translations in an appropriate style, which will not be subject to further review; • Provide consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation services during project workshops,. • Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in Linguistic Studies or Translation and/or diploma from an internationally recognized interpreter/translator school specializing in one of the following official languages of the United Nations: English or Russian • Three years of relevant experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and translation • Working knowledge of Russian and English and/or the official language of the country

• Extent and relevance of experience in in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from/into Tajik, English and Russian. • Extent and relevance of experience in supporting translation services of international organizations. • Familiarity with the FAO documentation, terminology and the reference work. • Familiarity with terminology research work. • Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills • Advanced computer skills and word processing (MS Office and other office equipment); advanced user of translation/interpretation software and equipment • Advance computer skills and word processing (MS Office and other office equipment). • Be able to produce results with rigid deadlines • Professional experience in providing translation services to international organization (written, oral)

Selection Criteria

• Skills and experience in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation from/into English, Russian and Tajik or any other official language of the United Nations, as well as from/into the official language of the country is an asset;
