This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the direct supervision of Head of Monitoring Team and overall supervision of the Head of Office or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Translator will:

  • Interprets/Translate for OHCHR in house official meetings and workshops.
  • Translation of external documents, correspondences, press releases, media advisories, reports, and other related texts. The translated text has to be delivered in MS Word or Excel or Power point files as required.
  • Translation of OHCHR internal documents such as human rights monitoring reports, mission, project annual and other types of reports, publications, training materials, as well as OHCHR messages, and rules, regulations and guidelines, and any other internal texts as required. The translated text has to be delivered in MS Word or Excel files, as required, following the formatting of the original document as needed.
  • Translation of all text contained in figures, boxes, tables, photo captions, sources and covers.
  • The translator is expected to perform terminology research (i.e. on UN/OHCHR/UN Term websites and others) to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all translations. The translator is also responsible for ensuring quality and accuracy of the entire document before submitting it back.
  • Provision of interpretation services for OHCHR officials and consultants during their visits and missions including workshops and conferences.
  • The interpreter is expected to perform terminology research (i.e. on UN/OHCHR/ UN Term websites and others) to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all translations. The interpreter is also responsible for ensuring quality, smoothness and accuracy of the interpretation.
  • Perform other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English language or language studies, and/or law, international development and any other social sciences r relevant field

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least 2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in translation, or other relevant programmes
  • Experience with UN and/or other international organizations is an asset

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
