Translating the subtitles of a UN Promotional Video from English to Japanese

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) serves as the United Nations’ regional hub promoting cooperation among countries to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. The largest regional intergovernmental platform with 53 Member States and 9 associate members, ESCAP has emerged as a strong regional think-tank offering countries sound analytical products that shed insight into the evolving economic, social and environmental dynamics of the region. The Commission’s strategic focus is to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is reinforced and deepened by promoting regional cooperation and integration to advance responses to shared vulnerabilities, connectivity, financial cooperation and market integration. ESCAP’s research and analysis coupled with its policy advisory services, capacity building and technical assistance to governments aims to support countries’ sustainable and inclusive development ambitions.

This Online Volunteer assignment is part of ESCAP’s Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development Division. With the recent launch of ESCAP’s Economic and Social Survey 2022, a promotional video was made to enhance the accessibility of the publication.

The Online Volunteer has a great role to play in the spreading of these important policy messages, by making them accessible in Japanese.

ESCAP's annual flagship publication, the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, was recently released, and with it a 5-minute promotional animated video. To increase the reach of the video, we call upon a team of Online Volunteers to translate the subtitles (about 650 words), to the video in several regional Asian languages, including Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Thai, and more

In this specific task, we are looking for translation from English to Japanese. We require English fluency as well as 2-3 years of prior experience with translation. We will test shortlisted candidates with a short document in English and ask them to translate it.

Educational experience: bachelor’s in translation and interpretation, communication, English, Japanese, or related fields is recommended.

Fluency in English and Japanese (especially written).

Experience with translating documents from English to Japanese.

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpretation, Communications, English, Japanese or other related fields is a plus.

Knowledge of Economics and Finance is a plus.
