This posting is for an online volunteering opportunity with the Strategic Force Generation Cell (SFGC/Cell). The Cell is composed of civilian experts from the Policy and Best Practice Service of PBPS and military experts from the Force Generation Service in OMA. SFGC works with Member States throughout the entire process of pledging military units and capabilities to support UN Peacekeeping efforts. Specifically, this UNV will work with SFGC portfolios that address capability gaps, ensure efficient deployments, strengthen and augment Troop- and Police-Contributing Country (T/PCCs) pledges, and improve the overall performance of peacekeepers. One of the main tasks of the Cell is conducting and completing Strategic Assessment and Advisory Visits (AAVs). During these visits, a group of experts assess the various components of a military pledge and advise T/PCCs on potential ways to align with UN standards and needs. Through conducting numerous AAVs, SFGC noted opportunities for growing and developing additional capabilities. This led to the development of special capacity-building projects to address gaps and improve the abilities of the troops pledged to peacekeeping. One such special project is the Real-Time Translation & Interpretation project, which seeks to address the critical need for improved communication methods by providing real-time translation to United Nations peacekeepers in mission. Language barriers often hinder effective communication, impacting mandate delivery and community engagement. The project aims to equip mission personnel with a digital tool facilitates seamless communication between diverse linguistic groups. The volume of languages poses significant challenges within UN peacekeeping missions. Limited proficiency of mission language among peacekeepers, coupled with low numbers of translators, mistranslations and cultural biases, hampers effective communication. Current interpretation practices often fall short, especially as the languages needed to communicate in UN missions are low-resource languages. This means that there has been little development in mapping these languages, few written resources, and/or little effort to create translation tools with these languages. With all these factors, an innovative solution is needed to enhance cross-language communication. The project seeks to develop a digital tool enabling automatic interpretation and translation of verbal and written communication in real-time. Artificial Intelligence has become the leading methodology and tool utilized to create translation systems, such as Google Translate. Within AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP) models are one of the main methods of building a translation tool. SFGC has worked with experts to begin developing an NLP as the first step in creating a larger real-time translation tool. By addressing the shortcomings of traditional interpretation methods, the tool aims to improve communication among mission staff, uniformed personnel and local populations, thereby enhancing situational awareness and facilitating mandate implementation.

In order to properly train the Natural Language Processing (NLP) model that will be used for the real-time translation and interpretation tool, the model must have a sufficient dataset of words and phrases in the target language. Therefore, the Volunteer will be tasked with translating a set of words and phrases related to UN Peacekeeping from English into Juba Arabic, and record these phrases. The recorded translated words and phrases will then be used to train the NLP model to translate seamlessly between English and Juba Arabic.
