Indigenous Peoples Portfolio

WFP’s Indigenous Peoples Portfolio ensures WFP’s assistance reaches Indigenous Peoples, and addresses their diverse needs, priorities, and experiences. Indigenous Peoples are at particular risk of being left behind, due to a complexity of factors including structural inequality and discrimination, displacement from encroachment on lands, conflict, and violence. This means WFP employees must be aware and equipped with tools, information and know-how to design and implement programming that is culturally appropriate, responds to their situations, and builds on Indigenous Peoples’ existing capacities and knowledge. Harnessing Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge and practices can play a critical role in environmental management, early warning, and food production. This work is done in close connection and alignment with WFP’s emerging Inclusion Agenda.

WFP’s Indigenous Peoples’ portfolio includes: • Awareness raising campaign at the global level. • Evidence-based guidance to ensure a principled engagement across programming. • Field-based research to understand specific contexts and identify the food security needs of Indigenous Peoples across regions. • Capacity strengthening of employees and support to country offices. • Partnership building with key actors, i.e, Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations, academia, UN agencies and others. • Strategic engagement in relevant global and regional fora and debates

The Indigenous Peoples Portfolio is looking for online volunteers to proofread, translate, and format technical guidance documents, brief case studies, data collection tools, reports, and strategy documents. Translated documents will support WFP personnel at the country, regional, and global level as they undertake inclusive approaches when engaging with Indigenous Peoples.

Online volunteers will provide support to the Indigenous Peoples Portfolio with proofreading and translation of guidance documents. Tasks will include liaising with the core team via email, translating, proofreading and matching formats of documents ranging between 800-6,500 words to Spanish. Approximately 1-2 documents will be translated per week, though this can vary per week based on the document length. Volunteer will also ensure that the translated terms are consistent across the document and in line with a WFP formatting and global and country normative frameworks.

Candidates must be native speakers in Spanish, have fluency in English, and experience translating documents from English into Spanish. Familiarity with technical language in Indigenous Peoples, food systems, humanitarian aid and development, nutrition and food security, rights, and civil society organizations is an asset. Previous experience with WFP / FAO / IFAD / WHO / UNEP / UNDP documents will be an asset. Previous experience translating UN documents will be an asset. They must be responsive via email and display an attention to detail.
