Background
I. Background
Women are key contributors across all sectors, communities, and societies. However, inequality still persists, and women face multiple barriers and gender-based discrimination at home, at school, at work, and in public life. Despite a growing number of women graduating from universities, their entry into the labor force has not seen a proportional growth, let alone in a leadership position. Violence against Women and Girls remains the most widespread and pervasive human rights violation worldwide affecting more than an estimated 1 in 3 women[1], a figure that has remained largely unchanged over the last decade.[2]
This reality shows that more efforts are needed to promote gender equality and end violence against women and girls. The upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, international civil society led campaign that takes place each year from 25 November to 10 December, is a time to raise awareness, mobilize, and spotlight support and actions for gender equality and prevention of violence against women and girls.
Comedy is a highly effective tool for communications and campaigns. It provides opportunities to counter-narratives that discriminate against women and provides safe spaces for women and men to express themselves. Responding to this, in 2021, the United Nations in Indonesia hosted a “Comedy for Equality” showcase, featuring performances from 10 Indonesian comics performing original stand-up routines that reflected humorously on gender inequalities and misogynistic stereotypes. Prior to the showcase, five workshops on comedy for equality were held throughout November and December.
This year, UN Women, UNFPA, and partners will hold “Orange the World” Comedy and Music to End Violence against Women. The “Comedy for Equality” workshop and performance will be organized as part of this activity. The workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of selected comedians from last year’s comedy for equality workshop to advocate for gender equality and end violence against women and girls and to influence and deliver messages that engage the public in promoting gender equality and challenging the harmful social norms in society. Following the workshop, the trainer and participating comedians will perform at the “Orange the World” event.
As such, UN Women is seeking a consultant to be the trainer for the stand-up comedy workshop and to host and perform at the stand-up comedy showcase.
II. The Objectives
The stand-up comedy workshop and performance aims to:
- Enable stand-up comedians to advocate for gender equality and end violence against women and girls.
- Strengthen stand-up comedians’ capacity to influence and deliver messages that engage the public in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and prevention of violence against women and girls.
- Spread the message of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and prevention of violence against women and girls, and encourage people to take action and challenge inequalities and harmful social norms.
[1] Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women, around 736 million, are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, non-partner or both (Violence against Women Prevalence Estimates), however, this figure would be even higher if it included the full continuum of violence that affects women and girls including sexual harassment, violence in digital contexts, harmful practices and sexual exploitation.
