What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational, and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the role

The Associate will contribute to the work of the Person Deprived of Liberty Unit in the Department of Protection and Essential Services (PES), alongside one other Associate with whom some tasks will be shared. The Unit aims to define the ICRC's detention policy and to support staff members working in the field and at Headquarters on behalf of people deprived of their liberty. The Associates have opportunities to develop their knowledge of detention and to apply and expand their existing skills, gaining work experience that will be useful for their careers.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

Collects and analyses the existing detention methodological tools to identify good practices and existing gaps (80%)

The Associate will be responsible, under the supervision of the Detention Adviser in charge of Methodology, for collecting and analysing existing detention methodological material, mentorship, and tools used in the ICRC's work for people deprived of liberty from various contexts to propose master templates and guidelines.

They will be in charge of:

  • Collects and analyses detention guidelines and tools used in detention to identify good practices and existing gaps and proposes new models;
  • In collaboration and consultation with the other departments working in detention (Wathab, Health, nutrition), participates in adapting existing methodological tools;
  • Using the existing internal platforms to promote the identified field good practices, templates, tools, etc.

Event, training, and ad hoc support to the Unit (20%)

The Person Deprived of Liberty Unit is responsible for courses or modules relating to persons deprived of their liberty. It is also involved in seminars and conferences on the subject. In support of this, the Associate will:

  • Participate in preparation for and running of meetings and training courses, including the definition of agendas, identification of speakers, conducting follow-up action, and drafting minutes;
  • Conduct administrative tasks concerning the meetings and training courses;
  • Ad hoc administrative and logistical support to the Unit;
  • Support the final stages of publications, including production, checking translations, and planning dissemination.

Additional tasks

  • The Associate may be asked to contribute to other areas of the Unit's work as and when required.

Education and Experience required

  • University degree (Master) in Law, Penology, Social sciences, Political sciences, History, International relations;
  • Good proven understanding of French and English including writing and editing;
  • Strong curiosity about the protection of people deprived of freedom (eg through study, internship, first professional Experience, volunteering, etc);
  • Proven ability to research, analyse, and synthesise information;
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work autonomously;
  • Team player able to work in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Excellent general digital literacy;
  • Since last graduation, no more than 24 months of professionally relevant Experience, of which no more than 12 months of non-internship paid work.

Desired profile and skills

  • Experience in the non-profit world is an asset;
  • Interest in working on issues related to the protection of persons deprived of liberty and fieldwork in the future;
  • Experience in organizing events or meetings and writing reports.
