What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

With more than hundred Forensic staff deployed in the field, the ICRC Forensic Unit brings a unique expertise in support of the organization mandate.

ICRC Forensic teams in the field offer directly or indirectly operational support and advice to States authorities, protection and assistance to its affected population when it comes to solving the case of the missing, the proper management of the dead or addressing sexual violence or torture.

At the Headquarter level in Geneva, the Forensic Unit has prime responsibility for defining concepts, guidelines, policies, procedures and tools related to Humanitarian Forensic Action along with other ICRC Programs (and notably the Central Tracing Agency).

Ensuring pertinent, adapted and timely internal communication between the HQ and the Field (Delegations and staff) but also at HQ level between different Divisions, Departments, Unit is a key factor to make ICRC transversal and encompassing a multi-disciplinary response more impactful and relevant to the population its serves.

Based in the HQ and reporting to the Head of unit, the Associate contributes to the Unit definition and implementation of communication strategy within the organization.

S/he revises and improves content for Forensic intranet and other internal communication channels, such as communities. S/he supports Unit management in generating content.

The role calls for an ‘inclusive mindset’, necessary for working with colleagues from diverse cultural and backgrounds and working with other departments/divisions.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

Under the supervision and guidance from the Unit management, the Associate

  • Participates to the elaboration of the Unit internal communication strategy in collaboration with ICRC internal communication Division
  • Helps implement communications projects and strategies
  • Drafts and edits communication materials
  • Ensures collection and proper update of databases and documents produced by the Unit
  • Maintains calendars and appointments
  • Prepares presentations and reports
  • Drafts and/or edits documents such as briefing notes, minutes of meeting, reference documents and tools
  • Promotes the unit’s work, through web-based platforms, ensuring relevance and visibility of its products and services in assisting in maintaining web conten

Relationships

Interact with the Forensic Unit, Communication division, and Protection division/Central Tracing Agency

Certifications / Education required

Master Degree in communication-related fields

Proficiency in English (C1)- French/Spanish an asset

Excellent writing skills

Competent user of Microsoft Office,

Maximum 2 years of professional experience after graduation (traineeship is considered as professional experience) in Communication related field (ideally in a scientific domain)

Desired profile and skills

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Knowledge and ideally some experience in digital communication and associated IT tools
  • Knowledge and experience in using social media (blogs, fora, internal and external social networks);
  • Strong analytical and research skills;
  • Capacity and willingness to learn about Forensic Sciences and Humanitarian Forensic Action
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Language

English, French/Spanish is asset
