The UN Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Communication Division communicates UNEP’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

UNEP has an exciting portfolio of campaigns and communication projects. This includes advocacy to shift textile consumption towards circularity, and thereby activate changes across the entire value chain This output mostly focuses on consumer-facing actors (e.g., media, in-house brand and product marketing, government consumer awareness agencies) but is also home to UNEP’s own advocacy work on fashion.

  1. Carry out day-to-day tasks on advocacy work of the UNEP Textile Initiative (output 4) to shift textile consumption towards circularity, including conducting research and collating evidence in support of sustainable fashion communication; supporting the development of presentations for training, webinars and international events on textiles; and preparing speaker briefings and interview questions for different UNEP textile team members and representatives.
  2. Help coordinate communication on the UNEP Textile Initiative, including supporting report launches, developing stories for the UNEP.org website and content for social media, as well as for specific international days such as WED and International Day of Zero Waste. This will include working with colleagues in the communication division in UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi in person, participating in weekly advocacy team and biweekly communication division meetings, and meeting with relevant counterparts across pollution, nature and climate pillars, in close coordination with the sustainable fashion advocacy lead / senior consultant.
  3. Establish, manage and monitor a textile supporter network comprised of global advocates and influencers in close coordination with the UNEP Goodwill Ambassador team.
  4. Support the sustainable fashion advocacy lead / senior consultant on substantive projects such as implementation of the Sustainable Fashion Communication Playbook, the Greenfluencing Project and the Textile Policy Podcast.
  5. Deliver webinars or trainings on Output 4 work in place of senior consultant as required.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
