You have:

  • At least 7-years of professional experience indicating progressive responsibility in related roles and technologies.

  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD).
  • Knowledge of software optimization of both front-end and back-end to ensure high performance of solutions.
  • University degree related to Computer Science, Information Systems or similar.
  • Fluency in oral and written English mandatory.
  • An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese is a plus.

We are currently seeking to fill a Technology Lead position in our Administrative Management & Technology Unit of the Communications, Advocacy & Marketing Division (CAM), based in Rome, Italy.

Background and purpose of the assignment:

The Technology Lead plays a critical role to ensure the division is able to maintain and improve its important digital solutions in a seamless, secure and compliant manner. The Technology Lead acts as the technology focal-point for the division, interfacing with the Technology division, internal project stakeholders and external software development and technology vendors.

The role is responsible for the technology aspect of the division's main custom platforms, such as the multilingual corporate communications website (WFP.org), Freerice and the Social Media Dashboard as well as other technologies adopted by the division.

The Technology Lead reports to the Head of Administrative Management & Technology of the Communications, Advocacy and Marketing (CAM) division and has a functional reporting line to the Head of Engineering of the Technology Division.

Duties and responsibilities

The candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Lead in regular Agile activities of the division's main custom digital projects and collaborating closely with the Product Manager / Project Manager, UX Lead, software developers and infrastructure teams to advise on the implementation and successful evolution of the technology solutions for the division.
  • Collaborate closely with team's to analyse and prioritise technical requests, including the drafting of technical tickets in order to be understandable for software developers to implement.
  • Manage and monitor development team's work to facilitate that the technical work is delivered on-time and on-budget.
  • Manage resource allocation proactively by ensuring appropriate resources and tools are assigned according to the project plan.
  • Ensure all technology solutions are compliant with all relevant technological and organisational regulatory requirements and procedures).
  • Ensure technology solutions and their environments are designed, developed, implemented, secured, tested and backed-up within the required quality requirements.
  • Ensure documentation is adequate to allow operation and maintenance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of IT Policies and Standards at WFP.
  • Cooperate on all relevant audits, reviews, and implementation of extraordinary measures, promptly addressing any concerns raised.
  • Manage technology vendors and maintain a pool of high quality talent at WFP’s disposal by carrying out Request for Proposals (RFPs) and establishing Long Term Agreements (LTAs) for web technology, with terms and conditions that ensure the highest quality deliverables for WFP.
  • Manage and facilitate the division's adoption of WFP's IT standards as they evolve over time.
  • Define and implement a password rotation strategy to ensure online properties remain secure.
  • Other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required qualifications and experience

  • At least 7-years of professional experience showing progressive responsibility in related roles and technologies, including experience deploying in enterprise production environments.
  • Experience in Drupal 8/9, Symfony or PHP 7/8 essential.
  • Experience in common web standards and tools, such as HTML, CSS, JS and using git, docker, LAMP stack.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code preferably using AWS.
  • Knowledge of ReactJS and ReactNative a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge and proficiency with mainstream software design & development technologies and methodologies, developing high-quality IT solutions, and Agile Scrum.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD).
  • Knowledge of software optimization of both front-end and back-end to ensure high performance of solutions.
  • University degree related to Computer Science, Information Systems or similar.

  • Ability to work independently and be self-organised.

Language requirements

  • Fluency in oral and written English mandatory. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is a plus.
