OBJECTIVE OF THE OFFICE/DEPARTMENT

This requisition is for employment at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO)

The Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Heath Department (CDE) promotes, coordinates, and implements technical cooperation activities directed toward the surveillance, prevention, control, and elimination of communicable diseases and zoonosis that are technically sound and appropriate for the political and sociocultural context in which they are implemented. It strives to achieve a sustainable impact on health by providing normative guidance, furthering the implementation of evidence-based interventions, and fostering alliances that strengthen country capacity, improve the effectiveness of inter-country collaboration, and facilitate policy and decision-making processes through improved health information coverage, analysis and quality at all levels.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Director, Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Heath Department (CDE), and the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, Neglected, Tropical and Vector Borne Diseases (CDE/VT), the incumbent is responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following assigned duties:

  1. Provide technical and programmatic support for the implementation of the Regional Strategy on the Prevention and Control of Arboviral Diseases, especially as it pertains to surveillance;
  2. Provide programmatic support for strengthening national technical capacities for the detection, treatment, and control of arboviral diseases by enhancing national surveillance capacities;
  3. Provide regional and country level support, as required, for development, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of related national arboviral surveillance and activities;
  4. Contribute to the strengthening of national dengue and other arboviral surveillance systems, regional databases and reporting of data in compliance with PAHO Resolutions;
  5. Consolidate and analyze the information generated by countries of the Region on arbovirus surveillance;
  6. Collaborate and provide support for the monitoring of regional trends of arboviral circulation as well as supporting the risk assessment of detected increases in arboviral transmission;
  7. Collaborate and assist in overseeing processes of developing new tools to strengthen arbovirus surveillance in the Region;
  8. Coordinate with countries to enable and ensure their participation in automating surveillance data transfer to PAHO through PAHO's Health Information Platform (PLISA);
  9. Support the preparation of a distance-based, virtual curriculum for countries on surveillance of arboviral diseases;
  10. Facilitate the online sessions provided by the PAHO Arboviral Program through the Regional Virtual Classroom within PAHO's Virtual Campus;
  11. Collaborate in the development and strengthening of the research agenda for key components of the Integrated Management Strategy for the Prevention and Control of arboviral diseases;
  12. Collaborate in the review, compilation and preparation of progress reports, situation analyses, evaluation tools and other strategic documents to support national and regional activities within the framework of PAHO Resolutions and agreements;
  13. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education****:

Essential: A bachelor’s degree in a health science related to the functions of the post from a recognized university.

Desirable: Graduate-level training in epidemiology or related areas of data analysis would be an asset.

Experience****:

Essential: Seven years of combined national and international experience working in surveillance of communicable diseases, arboviral epidemiology, and/or disease prevention and control programs.

Desirable: Experience working in surveillance of arboviral diseases in the Americas would be an asset.

Languages:

Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese would be an asset.

Demonstrated ability to effectively use current technology and software, in particular spreadsheets and presentations, as well as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and management information systems. Other IT skills and knowledge of other software programs such as R, Epi-lnfo, and Tableau would be an asset.

REMUNERATION

Annual Salary****: (Net of taxes)

USD $62,692 post adjustment

Post Adjustment****: 54.1% of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
