OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

A One Health approach recognizes the relationships between human, animal, and environmental health are key to sustainably address NTDs, and to achieve the targets set out in WHO's Road map for neglected tropical disease 2021-2030(“the road map”). This work will contribute to the three main pillars of the roadmap Accelerate programmatic action: Integrate One Health into NTD programme design and delivery; Intensify cross-cutting approaches: Coordinate and integrate action on NTDs across key sectors; Change operating models and culture to facilitate country ownership: Nurture and sustain country led One Health action. Accelerate programatic action: Integrate One Health in ND programme design and delivery.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Provide technical, strategic and operational support to the implementation of integrated and cross-cutting veterinary public health and One health interventions in reaching the NTD roadmap targets.
  • Provide technical support and guidance in the prevention, control and management of NTDs with a human-animal-environmental interaction that requires animal health and non-health programmes activities to scale up interruption of transmission Support the rollout of the Gavi investment for human rabies vaccines.
  • Provide technical support and guidance in strategies to control zoonotic transmission of NTDs to Member States through WHO Regional and Country Offices.
  • Contribute to the development of research priorities to adjust implementation strategies and accelerate progress for prevention, control and elimination.
  • Support countries in monitoring and evaluating programmes and operational research in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Draft technical documents and reports on specific issues related to the burden, the implementation, monitoring indicators and the impact of the interventions to control and interrupt transmission of zoonotic NTDs.
  • Advocate for NTD prevention, control and management of NTDs with governments and partners, engage in partner networking and in resource mobilization to reach the NTD targets.
  • Perform other related tasks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: An advanced-level University degree in Veterinary, medical, or life sciences or a related field of direct relevance to the profile of the post description Desirable: Doctoral degree in a health-related, social or behavioral science discipline.

Experience

Essential: A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in the management and implementation of zoonotic disease control/elimination programmes at national and international levels. Desirable: Experience of other neglected tropical diseases epidemiology, and experience in bi-lateral and multi-lateral agencies practices.

Skills

  • Demonstrated managerial and leadership ability, networking capacities and negotiation skills.
  • Data analysis and reporting, and oral presentation skills.
  • Extensive computer skills with experience in the use of PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other common software.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5368 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
