Technical Officer - Neglected Tropical Diseases unit

The UN Volunteer will work with Neglected Tropical Diseases Unit (NTDs) in the Department of Communicable Diseases, WHO-EMRO to support member states in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to ensure continuation and enhancing NTDs programme services with a focus on surveillance, analysis of data and facilitate availability of diagnostics and medicines.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Regional Advisor-NTDs or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer - National specialist, NTDs will:

• Assist NTD unit in following up with WCOs to ensure submission of surveillance data and other reports to regional and global reporting system. • Provide support in the analysis of NTD data collected and development of regional and country profiles for high-burden countries. • Follow up with NTD focal points in WCOs to facilitate availability of NTD commodities at country level and reporting on use of them to EMRO & HQ. • Facilitate and participate in organizing virtual, hybrid and in-person consultations, workshops and meetings. • Technical review of guidelines/documents and any other material translated into Arabic. • Develop and submit a progress report at the end of the assignment. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Results/expected outputs:

As an active NTD unit team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to Neglected Tropical Disease Unit, DCD, EMRO and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

o Enhanced and proactive engagement with WCOs to ensure submission of surveillance data and other reports to regional and global reporting system. o NTD data are analyzed and presented and country profiles for high-burden countries developed. o Proactively followed up with WCOs to ensure availability of NTD commodities at country level and relevant reports on their use are submitted to EMRO & HQ. o Organization of virtual, hybrid and in-person consultations, workshops and meetings facilitated. o Guidelines/documents and any other material translated into Arabic are technically reviewed. o Submitted a progress report at the end of the assignment.

Cairo is a Security Level 3 (Moderate) and category “A” Duty Station. Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is among the largest cities not only in Africa and the Middle East but also globally (the 19th largest city across the world). It is also one of the most densely populated cities worldwide with a population in excess of 16 million people. The weather in Cairo is mostly warm or hot with cool nights: a very hot summer May to October and a mild winter November to April. Cairo (and Egypt) has long been a centre of the region’s political and cultural life, with high levels of tourism. Like other similar cities, Cairo offers good quality life in terms of access to shopping centres, banks, medical services, cultural events, etc. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.

UN Specialist Volunteer gets the following package:

• Volunteer Living Allowance (around EGP 16,139/Month)

• Entry Lump-Sum = USD 400 (one-time payment paid in EGP)
