OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of the Group on Data, Strategy and Innovation (DSI) is to support countries to attain universal coverage of health services for better and equitable health outcomes.

Population in the Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) countries is ageing very rapidly and countries need to anticipate changes and take early actions to address cross-sectorial challenges related to ageing.

In this context, ageing is one of regional priorities in the For the Future: towards the healthiest and safest Region. A vision for WHO's work in the Western Pacific Region which has been agreed upon with Member States, WHO staff, partners and stakeholders during the 70th Regional Committee and under the Regional Director.

The Healthy Ageing (AGE) team works under the Data, Strategy and Innovation (DSI) group, which will provide cross-cutting support to other technical divisions and country offices to drive improvements in systems and design of health services.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Coordinate WHO technical advice for member states in the Western Pacific on ageing and health

1.1 Lead country consultations on implementation of healthy ageing; and

1.2 Draft background documents and prepare reports or country consultations on ageing as requested by member states.

2. Lead the implementation of the "new normal" for healthy ageing in light of COVID-19

2.1 Develop and manage the project plan (with sub-tasks, responsibility and deadline);

2.2 Oversee the implementation of necessary contracts and budget;

2.3 Lead the discussion with WHO country offices and Member States on operationalizing the"new normal" in each country's context;

2.4 Work with academic institutes and WHO collaborating centres to establish necessary collaborations to produce necessary products and/or knowledge; and

2.5 Summarize and disseminate deliverables.

3. Facilitate the knowledge on ageing across countries

3.1 Compile the necessary information (e.g. WHO materials, reports, communication materials) and post them on the WHO website;

3.2 Organize the knowledge sharing session (e.g. training, webinar) across countries; and

3.3 Work with academic institutes and WHO collaborating centres to establish research projects to fill the research gap.

4. Other related tasks

4.1 Oversee future consultants, volunteer and/or interns.

4.2 Any other tasks as needed and assigned by the Coordinator, AGE/DSI.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in public health or other relevant natural or social sciences. Desirable: Master's degree in public health or other relevant areas.

Experience

Essential: At least five years work experience in public health or other relevant field/s. Desirable: Has experience in managing public health project(s), overseeing team members in multiple countries including low and middle income countries; has work experience with the World Health Organization and/or other United Nation agencies in healthy ageing and/or related fields; has experience of supporting countries in the Western Pacific Region to develop and implement national strategy for ageing; and has published more than one academic article in peer-reviewed journals in the field of public health as the lead author.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 60,962 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2317 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
