OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Division of Country Health Programmes (CHP) assists country efforts to reduce the burden of non-communicable and communicable diseases and address the social, economic and environmental determinants of health, and promotes policies and actions for health through stewardship of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network. It focuses on health promotion measures; prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, and risks related to tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and the harmful use of alcohol; communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis, and vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases; elimination and control of vaccine-preventable diseases and advocacy for increased use of vaccines; containing and controlling antimicrobial resistance; addressing existing and emerging environmental health risks, and supporting violence and injury prevention. A determination to ensure universal access to people-centred quality health services across the continuum of care is matched by enriching the evidence base for policy design and interventions using social, cultural and behavioural approaches, to drive implementation of innovation at national, regional and local levels.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

To coordinate the day-to-day management of the Healthy Cities Secretariat, support network activities and contribute to the technical development of the Healthy Cities Network.

Key duties:

1. Coordinate the day-to-day management of the Healthy Cities Secretariat:

--> Coordinate the process around the designation and accreditation of WHO Healthy Cities flagship cities and national networks, including liaising with city and network coordinators, external assessors and consultants.

--> Coordinate the communication between the Secretariat and network members, manage relevant incoming requests, draft and send responses as appropriate; coordinate outgoing communications, including news, event alerts and other matters of interest to network members.

--> Contribute to developing internal and external WHO guidance on engagement with the Healthy Cities Network as a collaboration platform, including SOPs.

--> Manage the content development of the WHO Europe website on the Healthy Cities Network and its activities.

2. Support the technical preparation, implementation and follow-up of Healthy Cities Network meetings and activities, including:

--> Regular monthly network meetings, technical webinars and other thematic network meetings

--> Meetings of the different committees of the WHO Healthy Cities Network, in particular the Advisory Committee, Scientific Committee and Political Committee.

--> Annual meetings and conferences, in particular the Annual Business Meeting and Technical Conference.

3. Contribute to the strengthening of the technical content of the Healthy Cities Network activities, including capacity building, publications and the expansion of the network and its partnerships; liaise with Healthy Cities Network thematic task teams and working groups on workplans and technical deliverables; participate in meetings, identify opportunities and synergies across technical groups.

4. Perform other related duties as required or instructed, including providing support to other areas of work as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Undergraduate degree in social sciences, political science, public policy or public administration, or in another discipline relevant to the position. Desirable: Relevant higher education in public health, health promotion or urban health.

Experience

Essential: At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in the field of global public health. Desirable: Experience working with health cities projects at local, sub-national or inter-country levels. Relevant experience within WHO, the United Nations or other international organizations or institutions

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 48,805 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2733 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
