OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

In the context of WHO priority for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the Department of Communicable Diseases (DCD) at the WHO EMR office, works with Member States and key global stakeholders to implement the AMR global action plan in alignment with the global AMR action plan, the 13th Global Programme of Work of WHO and the Sustainable Development Goals, and to strengthen capacity for prevention and control of infectious diseases (IPC) in healthcare settings and the community.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Contribute to the development of regional and country operational IPC strategic plans at national, health care facility and community settings in collaboration with regional counterparts, country offices, and implementing national technical partners.

2. Co-develop, adapt, and disseminate IPC technical products at regional and country levels (e.g., national IPC guidelines, IPC policies, assessment tools, standard operating procedures) in collaboration with relevant departments and partners.

3. Provide required IPC expertise for the preparedness, readiness, and response of outbreaks, epidemic and pandemic emerging infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19) including development, review and implementation of IPC technical guidance for health emergencies.

4. Strengthen collaboration and integration of IPC in various programmes (health system strengthening, patient safety, IPC in primary care, workforce, emergencies) at all levels (country, regional, and headquarters).

5. Support countries to establish national IPC capacities including education and training activities targeting health workforce at all levels of care, including primary health care.

6. Participate in the establishment of IPC country surge capacity, IPC readiness country support, monitoring and evaluation of IPC activities, and deployment to IPC emergency operations when needed.

7. Support countries in the establishment and implementation of surveillance programmes for healthcare-associated infections and infections among healthcare workers (particularly for COVID-19) at the national and facility levels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A first university degree in any health-related field, including infection prevention and control, nursing, medicine, infectious diseases, tropical medicine, microbiology, epidemiology, public health, from a recognized institute. Desirable: A master's degree in Public Health.

Experience

Essential: At least five years of experience with proven international exposure in the field of IPC, including experience in developing and national IPC guidance documents, policies, implementing IPC measures within healthcare facilities, HAI surveillance programmes, and developing and implementing IPC education and training programmes. Desirable: - Experience with evaluation of IPC programmes at national and facility levels, including experience in epidemiology, surveillance, research and analysis and databases for monitoring and evaluation. - Previous experience with WHO, other UN agencies, recognized humanitarian organizations or -non-governmental organizations.

Skills

Demonstrated knowledge in infection prevention and control at the national and facility level. Substantial knowledge in medical practice, public health and patient safety. High sense of accountability and responsibility.Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,692 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1881 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
