UNICEF Ecuador in its Health and Nutrition programme is working collaboratively with governmental institutions related to social areas, emphasizing health and nutrition. This assignment is part of UNICEF´s programmatic work in Health and Nutrition, established as a priority in the Country Programme Document under output 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3:

1.1). More pregnant women, children, adolescents, their families, and communities are empowered to demand their rights to health and nutrition and carry out practices for their fulfilment.

1.2). The State has strengthened capacities to provide quality, accessible, equitable and universal health and nutrition services, with cultural relevance and a gender focus, to pregnant women, children, adolescents and their families.

1.3). The State has improved capacities to adopt and implement evidence-based public policies aimed at the comprehensive prevention, promotion and cost-effective care of health and nutrition, dedicating adequate resources, and using a life-course, gender and intercultural approach.

The position reports to the Health and Nutrition Officer.

How can you make a difference?

In support and consultation with the Health and Nutrition Officer, the key functions of the UNICEF Technical Associate (Health), are summarized as follows:

  • Supports the coordination for the provision of high quality and timely technical support to key line social and health Ministers to improve children nutrition, specifically for the prevention of child malnutrition in all its forms across the life cycle.
  • Supports the coordination of UNICEF’s knowledge generation and knowledge management function as it relates to UNICEF’s and partners’ actions, results, and learnings to improve children development and nutrition.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical documents and presentations for the prevention of child malnutrition in all its forms across the life cycle.

  • Facilitating the development of programme cooperation agreements (PCAs) and terms of reference by providing information and drafting selected sections of it.
  • Organize and accompany field visits to monitor the health and nutrition local intervention in prioritized territories.
  • Provide specialized assistance to strengthen the endowment of the prioritized package to prevent chronic child malnutrition related to a) nominal follow-up, b) results-based budgeting, c) spaces for intersectoral coordination at the national and local level, and d) generation of information on prevalence.
  • Provide inputs for the execution of the meetings of the UNS Inter-agency Nutrition Group and participate in the technical spaces that are called.
  • Support the preparation of periodic or ad-hoc financial and technical reports relating to country office and donors to support the office in optimizing use of programme funds.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of high school degree, a first level university degree is desirable in one of the following fields: public health and nutrition, sociology, political science, economy, or another relevant technical field.
  • A minimum of seven years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: public affairs, public policy, and social intervention. Scientific knowledge of public policy oriented to childhood malnutrition. Experience in developing public policy and development proposals. Previous work at international organizations is considered and asset.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of English or another official UN language is highly desirable.
