OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Within the Department of Governing Bodies, the Office of Language Services (LNG) provides high-quality, timely and cost-effective translation, interpretation, editing, official records, word-processing and online services for the governing bodies, as well as language services for the Director-General's Office and WHO technical programmes, so as to make WHO health policy and technical information accessible to its target audiences in the official languages of the Organization.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Supports the digital business needs of GBS, including creating, updating and publishing web and intranet pages, on-time publishing of GBS documentation simultaneously in all languages, and responding to requests for new pages based on current GBS priorities and strategies;
  • Follows up with colleagues in other relevant departments, particularly the Department of Communications, to ensure website availability and performance during day-to-day operations, response to requests for technical support from stakeholders, and monitors and reports on content using web analytics data;
  • Advises on optimal designs for publication of digital content to ensure maximum performance and access for stakeholders;
  • Assists in the support and maintenance of editing, translation and document management tools and other language technologies used in the department;
  • Performs activities related to the pre-processing of files received for editing and translation, including checking files for compliance with tools, creating/amending graphics and supporting translation teams when working with specialized file formats;
  • Assists in the support and maintenance of tools developed in the context of the AKN4UN initiative;
  • Assists in the support and maintenance of neural machine translation (NMT);
  • Provides graphic design services for GBS, and occasionally other departments, particularly in relation to the preparation of the conference and governing bodies materials, and, on request, provides support and advice on layout and preparation of documents for printing;
  • Administers the GBS documentation archiving server and works with the library service to ensure the institutional repository (IRIS) is up to date in relation to GBS documents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completion of secondary, technical or commercial school education or equivalent. Desirable: Professional training or study in graphic design, web design and content management at a recognized school or its equivalent in work experience.

Experience

Essential: 8 years of relevant experience in graphic and web design, website maintenance, and use and implementation of digital content management systems and workflows, including experience in WHO, or other UN systems or international organizations. Desirable: Experience in the use and implementation of Sitefinity. Experience in supporting language teams, including practical knowledge of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and support activities associated with the translation process. Experience in creating and editing digital assets such as photos, videos, infographics, presentations, social media assets, podcasts and/or other digital content. Knowledge of XML language and XML-based documentation workflows.

Use of Language Skills

Essential: Expert knowledge of English. Intermediate knowledge of French. Desirable: Beginner's knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Russian, Spanish and Chinese). The above language requirements are interchangeable.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at CHF 84,962 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
