The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a state owned organisation. We work worldwide in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ International Services (InS) is an integral division of GIZ. We offer the experience, the regional and technical know-how of GIZ in the global market and provide international clients with expertise in terms of economic and result-oriented services.

GIZ International Services is currently preparing for an EU funded ecotourism project in Malawi. For the moment we foresee a Team Leader with the following objectives.

The project aims to support the development of ecotourism in Malawi. Malawi's variety of natural resources and attractions make the country an ideal tourist destination. Developing this potential creates strong opportunities for economic growth, increase of foreign exchange earnings, job creation in rural areas, as well as for preserving the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

Your tasks

The Team Leader will work with project stakeholders in Malawi, the European Union Delegation, local enterprises, and especially rural communities to achieve project objectives. S/he will develop project strategy, build and lead an effective team, and achieve project objectives, including the folllowing:

  • Develop and implement a strategy for ecotourism development in Malawi
  • Identify and promote ecotourism investment opportunities
  • Enhance the capacity of local communities to manage and own ecotourism ventures
  • Develop, certify, and grade ecotourism products and services
  • Improve institutional capacities at all levels for coordinating ecotourism development
  • Strengthen research in the field of ecotourism
  • Enhance information management systems for ecotourism
  • Engage in brand building and enhance access to local and international source markets

Your profile

We are looking for a Team Leader with the following profile:

  • Extensive experience and expertise (min. 15 years) leading country-wide tourism development programs with a focus on ecotourism
  • Experienced working respectfully and effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including ministries and rural communities
  • Expert understanding of the global tourism industry and international source markets, esp. in the area of ecotourism
  • Expert knowledge of rural development, natural resource management, cultural and ecological conservation
  • Professional experience in the management of development cooperation projects, excellent leadership and coordination skills
  • Experience managing EU-funded projects, knowledge of project cycle management and EU rules and procedures
  • Grants management experience
  • Previous work in Sub-Sahara Africa is strongly preferred

Location information

The location remains to be defined.

We expect the start date to be in June 2024 and the period of implementation to be 48 months.
