For every child, clean water

The Water, Hygiene and Sanitation program is implemented over the period 2019-2023 with the objective of contributing to the achievement of SDG 6 relating to water and sanitation. It aims to achieve two outputs, the first on eliminating open defecation and the second on improving access to safely managed water. The Wash officer will support the technical implementation of the Hygiene and Sanitation Fund program under the supervision of the WASH specialist. When done effectively, the achievement of the outcome results will improve child survival, growth and development, and reduce inequalities in the country.

How can you make a difference?

  • Contribute to the development/establishment of WASH-related outcome and output results, as well as related strategies, through analysis of WASH sector needs and priorities.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation exercises, programme reviews and annual sectoral reviews with government and other counterparts and prepare reports on results for required action/interventions at the higher level of programme management.
  • Provide technical and operational support to government counterparts, NGO partners, UN system partners and other country office partners/donors on the application and understanding of UNICEF policies, strategies, processes and best practices in WASH, to support programme implementation.
  • Undertake field visits and surveys, collect and share reports with partners/stakeholders. Report critical issues, bottlenecks and potential problems to supervisor, for timely action
  • Take up support roles in an emergency response and early recovery, as and when the need arises.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: sanitary engineering, Water, sanitation and Hygiene, public Health or another relevant technical field.
  • Additional relevant post-graduate courses that complement/supplement the main degree are a strong asset.
  • At least two years' professional experience in the management of Water, Hygiene and Sanitation programmes. A very good knowledge of Behaviour Change Approaches to Hygiene and Sanitation, in particular the Community Led Total sanitation approach (CLTS) and Menstrual Hygiene and Health.
  • Relevant experience in a United Nations agency or organization is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in French is required. Knowledge of English and of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
