UNICEF Tanzania expects to map out potential areas for future embedded and mobile. An embedded system is a microprocessor-based computer hardware system with software that is designed to perform a dedicated function, either as an independent system or as a part of a large system. At the core is an integrated circuit designed to carry out computation for real-time operations. These operations might be information about services such as functionality of water pumps, teacher and student attendance, complaint and suggestion boxes.

UNICEF realizes the potential embedded systems might have in the future of programme implementations and therefore wishes to explore potential use cases in Tanzania. The intern will be expected to prototype a device in a real live setting according to requirements provided by UNICEF staff and teams. Any innovation/product produced from this internship placement will be under protection of GNU General Public License 2.0.

How can you make a difference?

1. With the support of the Innovation and Knowledge management Specialist, identify relevant programmes and programme owners to participate in development of embedded and mobile system prototype
   • Engage with relevant UNICEF staff in different sections and units to share knowledge and identify a potential challenge.
   • Carry out intensive research on the challenge identified to get a better understanding of the challenge.
   • Perform a literature review of the challenge to identify solutions developed by others that address partially or in full the same challenge.
2. Jointly with programme owners and utilizing an HCD approach create an ICT prototype solution
   • Utilizing a Human-centered approach define requirements for the development of an ICT prototype to respond to the challenge.
   • Design and develop an ICT prototype of the proposed solution to address the challenge.
   • Prepare draft documentation about the solution and jointly revise with Innovation and Knowledge Management Specialist
   • Upload solution information into INVENT
   • Trial prototype in real life setting
3. Document experience and share with programme owners and other UNICEF staff
   • Present internship final report;
   • Deliver one session to all staff about the internship programme and the results from the prototype

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• Final year student, recent graduate (less than 2 years) or Master Degree Student in computer science
• Relevant experience in Human Centered Design, namely interviewing and documenting programme activities
• Experience with mobile technologies and database management systems;
• Previous volunteer experience with NGO’s or UN agencies
