  • Good interpersonal, written, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with behavioral sciences.

Result of Service

In close coordination with the UNEP India Office, and project implementation partners, the consultant is expected to complete the activities under the project and effective implementation Of SWM project in Mumbai with focus on plastic pollution.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serve 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance. UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyse the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment. UNEP India focuses on support India in realizing the objectives and actions under the UN Country Sustainable Development Framework, supported by the regional and global programmes of UNEP. UNEP is currently implementing a project in Mumbai city, as a part of the regional project on solid waste management (SWM) with specific reference to dealing with plastic waste management. The project aims to enable a climate-responsive, circular plastic waste management system in Mumbai, India through targeted assessments, actionable planning, stakeholder capacity building, and knowledge generation, supporting the design and implementation of scalable, locally relevant solutions. In order to oversee the functioning of the project, a consultant is needed for day-to-day coordination with all stakeholders including government officials, civil society organizations, research organizations, inter-governmental organizations, multilateral organizations, private sector, funding agencies and philanthropic organizations, to map out expertise and align efforts for assisting the Government of India for effective implementation of the project. The consultant will report to Head, UNEP India Country Office.

Qualifications/special skills

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/ environmental management/ ocean science/ social sciences/ management / pollution studies/communication or related field. • A first-level university degree in combination with three additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Minimum of five years of professional experience; in solid waste management with specific focus on plastic waste management is required. • Experience in engaging with different stakeholders in the related field is desirable • Experience in planning and execution of outreach activities both online and offline is desirable • Experience in dealing with developing countries and international institutions is an asset • Experience in working with the Government of India or other national institutions in India is desirable • Familiarity with project management tools and reporting cycles • Ability to convene multistakeholder events • Good interpersonal, written, and communication skills • Familiarity with behavioral sciences.

Languages

• Fluency in written and spoken English is required. • Knowledge of Marathi and Hindi is an advantage.
