Action Against Hunger USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network. As an independent NGO, Action Against Hunger USA currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs, and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Additional growth is anticipated.

Summary of Position

The surgeon will perform surgical procedures to diagnose, treat, and manage various medical conditions. He/She will collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide surgical interventions and postoperative care to patients.

Purpose

The purpose of the surgeon role is to utilize advanced surgical skills and medical knowledge to perform surgical procedures that improve or restore patients' health. He/she will be responsible for diagnosing patients, planning and executing surgical interventions, and providing postoperative care to ensure optimal patient outcomes. His/her role will contributes to the overall healthcare system by providing specialized surgical expertise and improving patients' quality of life.

Engagement

Surgeons will engage in a variety of activities to fulfill their role in providing surgical care. He/she will collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgical technicians, to ensure coordinated and safe patient care throughout the surgical process. Surgeons engage with patients and their families, discussing treatment options, obtaining informed consent, and providing preoperative and postoperative education and support. He/she will also engage in continuous professional development, staying updated with advancements in surgical techniques and technology.

Essential Job Functions

  • Surgical Procedures: Perform surgical procedures according to established protocols and best practices, utilizing advanced surgical techniques and technology. Ensure patient safety and follow infection control measures during surgical interventions.
  • Patient Evaluation and Diagnosis: Assess patients' medical conditions, review medical histories, and order diagnostic tests to evaluate and diagnose surgical conditions. Interact with patients to gather relevant information and make informed decisions regarding surgical interventions.
  • Treatment Planning and Consultation: Develop treatment plans based on the diagnosis, including surgical options, potential risks, and benefits. Consult and collaborate with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and patient-centered care.
  • Preoperative Care: Provide preoperative evaluation, preparation, and education to patients, including explaining the surgical procedure, potential risks, anesthesia options, and postoperative expectations. Ensure patients are physically and emotionally prepared for surgery.
  • Intraoperative Care: Perform surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols, maintaining sterility, and ensuring patient safety. Collaborate with the surgical team to coordinate and monitor patient care during surgery.
  • Postoperative Care: Provide postoperative care, including monitoring patients' recovery, managing pain, addressing complications, and coordinating follow-up care. Educate patients and families on postoperative instructions and potential side effects.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including surgical notes, progress notes, and postoperative follow-up reports. Ensure timely completion of documentation and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Stay updated with advancements in surgical techniques, technology, and medical knowledge through ongoing education, attending conferences, and participating in professional organizations.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience:

  • Medical degree (MD) from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of a residency program in surgery accredited by the relevant medical board.
  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification in surgery.
  • Current and valid medical license to practice as a surgeon.
