This online volunteer will support the Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism (“Global Sports Programme”) within the Special Projects and Innovation Branch of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).

The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the General Assembly in June 2017. The Office has five main functions: (a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates across the United Nations System; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across the 43 Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counter-terrorism across the United Nations System and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the Strategy.

As part of UNOCT, the Special Projects and Innovation Branch (SPIB) actively supports the UNOCT mandate through the targeted conceptualization, as well as development and implementation of special technical assistance arrangements, which includes the work conducted under the Global Sports Programme. The Global Sports Programme was launched in 2020 as a cross-cutting initiative to: i) assist Member States in protecting vulnerable targets in the context of major sporting events, ii) leverage the power of sports and its values to strengthen social cohesion and build resilience to violent extremism, and iii) safeguard sport practice as a vehicle for empowering vulnerable categories.

The incumbent will contribute to specific assignment relating research to inform project proposals developed by the programmatic team.

We are looking for 2 Online Volunteers who have interest in global peace and security affairs with interest in forward-looking initiatives in the fields of sport security and prevention of violent extremism (PVE). By conducting open source and desk research the on-line volunteers will help inform projects development in the field of security of major sporting events and the use of sport values for preventing violent extremism.

The main deliverable will be a an approximately 50 pages internal analytical report to inform the Global Sports Programme strategic partnership framework with public and private entities. The report is expected to inform the most relevant and beneficial partnership to assist the programme continued effective delivery. Findings from the report will be available for the purpose of the programme evaluation Planned n Q4 2025.
