The Gender and Safeguards Unit (GSU) of UNEP is committed to integrating the ESSF into the planning and execution of UNEP’s projects and programmes. Stakeholder engagement, information sharing, and access to grievance redressal are important pillars of the effective ESSF implementation. Environmental and social screening
The safeguard requirements are addressed through the process of environmental and social screening, impact assessment, and management of potential environmental and social risks and impacts associated with project and programme activities., impact assessment, and management of potential risks associated with project and programme activities are used to address the safeguard requirements. UNEP has developed various safeguards tools to aid project managers in predicting and assessing potential project risks. The Safeguard Risk Identification Form (SRIF) is a key tool for identifying potential environmental and social risks and their levels, providing the foundation for safeguard risk assessment and management to avoid, minimize, mitigate, and offset risks. Risk management strategies include the use of gender action plans, stakeholder engagement plans, environmental and social impact assessments, environmental and social management plans and specific risk management plans. The GSU provides advice on how respond to risk types and levels, as well as monitoring and guiding project managers and the project teams accordingly.
UNEP is currently seeking the assistance of 10 online volunteers to review various UNEP projects. The volunteers will be tasked with the following duties:
• Screen the submission of the SRIF by UNEP project managers to assess the quality of risk identification and provide comments and suggestions accordingly.
• Provide recommendations for UNEP projects to take actions to avoid, minimize or mitigate identified risks.
• Examine management plans related to safeguard risks, gender, stakeholders, and grievance redress mechanisms.
The UNEP safeguards team will provide briefing on its safeguard policy and the operational requirements before commencing the assignment. Each assignment will have a tight submission deadline, so being responsive will be highly valued.
