The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) mandate includes monitoring and reporting, technical assistance and capacity-building for the Palestinian Authority and civil society. OHCHR is specifically mandated by Human Rights Council resolutions S-9/1 and S-12/1 of 2009 to monitor and report regularly on the human rights situation in the OPT. Pursuant to its mandate, OHCHR submits periodic reports to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly and informs discussions within other United Nations bodies. In addition, OHCHR is the coordinator of the Humanitarian Protection Cluster. The online volunteer will support the Gaza sub-office assisting in general human rights related work and carrying out monitoring and reporting.
The online volunteer will support verification work in contexts where traditional information sources are limited or unavailable. This includes assisting with open-source monitoring and analysis of human rights–related information, as well as general situation monitoring.
Tasks include:
• Conduct open-source research on social media, media reports and other publicly available sources related to the human rights situation in the assigned area.
• Prepare one weekly summary brief highlighting key developments and verified information identified during the research, in line with OHCHR monitoring methodology.
Intermediate Excel skills, including recording data methodologically and using spreadsheets efficiently, is required. Proficiency in social media applications is required. Familiarity with the Palestinian context is desirable.
