The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on the environmental dimension of sustainable development. During the upcoming seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEP-7), a landmark event will take place on 8 December: the First Special Dialogue of Indigenous Peoples. This dialogue, held under the theme "Recognition, Respect, and Protection of Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Science, and Practices as Key Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet," aims to elevate the voices and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples. It will serve as a pivotal platform to integrate their invaluable knowledge into global environmental policy and action. To ensure the success of this historic event, we are seeking a dedicated Online Volunteer to provide support in its organization and reporting.
Under the supervision of the Programme Administrative Assistant, the Online Volunteer will be responsible for:
Pre-Event Organizational Support: • Assist in drafting and finalizing official communication and informational materials for dialogue participants. • Support the logistical coordination with registered speakers and attendees, including managing queries and disseminating key information. • Help organize and manage digital background documents, agendas, and participant bios in a shared online repository. • Contribute to the preparation of presentation slides and other visual aids for the session.
Live-Event Virtual Support (if applicable): • Provide real-time, technical and administrative support during the dialogue session. • Assist in monitoring the virtual participant queue and facilitating Q&A sessions through the online platform. • Take detailed, concise, and accurate notes of the proceedings.
Post-Event Reporting and Knowledge Management: • Core Responsibility: draft a comprehensive summary report of the dialogue. • Synthesize key discussions, interventions, consensus points, and recommendations raised by Indigenous leaders and other participants. • Ensure the report accurately reflects the themes of recognition, respect, and protection of Indigenous knowledge. • Revise the draft report based on feedback from the supervision team.
Candidates should possess a familiarity with the international environmental governance landscape, particularly with UNEP and multilateral environmental agreements. They should also demonstrate a understanding of the issues surrounding Indigenous Peoples' rights, knowledge systems, and their contributions to environmental conservation. Furthermore, prior UNEP internship or volunteer experience will greatly enhance their candidacy.
