The volunteers will be working with a team of experts and technical specialists to develop solutions for this SDG related challenge. Preserving and monitoring coral could highly benefit local population groups as they protect coastlines from erosion and floods. Coral reefs also play a major role for local economies as they provide high value targets for (eco)-tourism and protection for coastal (small scale) economies such as SME's.

The work done by the volunteers will directly help to construct and evaluate methods to improve resilience of coastal economies by improving the understanding of coral reef habitats in those regions.

SDG AI Lab is developing methods to use freely available data to

1) Monitor the extent and location of coral reefs 2) Assess the health of coral reefs 3) Create models and systems to detect coral reef bleaching 4) Create models and systems to predict coral reef bleaching

Work activities will be planned and executed using freely available tools such as QGIS, Python and other programming languages, if required. A Microsoft Teams account may be necessary for communication. For other cases, Email is sufficient. The volunteer needs a good internet connection and computer with sufficient system resources to work with large datasets. The planning will be lead by experts from SDG AI Lab and a clear delivery schedule will be established.

The volunteer is expected to have a background in Oceanography, Geography, Geodesics, Computer Science, Remote Sensing, Geomatics or similar fields, that are applicable to the task description. Experience in programing and scripting for Data Science activities is required.
