- Fluent written and oral communication in English (another UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is a plus).
- SQL knowledge/experience and database management systems.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline humanitarian agency addressing hunger and malnutrition worldwide. WFP tackles poverty and hunger through a range of interventions: saving lives and protecting livelihoods in emergencies; investing in the prevention and mitigation of disasters; restoring and rebuilding lives and livelihoods in post-conflict or post-disaster situation; and other interventions to tackle hunger. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in over 80 countries.
The vision of Supply Chain Retail and Markets unit is “to help create and strengthen sustainable markets”. Food Assistance through local commercial sector will help boost local economy, but it will not necessarily address inefficiencies in the Market System. One of SC’s key roles is to assess, identify and remove those inefficiencies to help improve Access, Price, Quality and Service in Markets.
Supply Chain Retail and Markets unit at WFP Headquarters currently focuses on the roll-out of the Market System Analysis (MSA) which identifies inefficiencies in local supply chain and recommends potential Market Development Activities (MDA) addressing those inefficiencies.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Market Development, the incumbent will be assigned the following responsibilities:
1. Lead the Market System Analysis workstream
- Coordinate with country offices (CO’s) and regional bureaux (RB’s) and jointly define the roll out plan for each region
- Continue to improve the training materials and provide trainings to WFP staff and other external stakeholders in the COs and RBs
- Closely monitor MSA implementation and validate the MSA approach, questionnaires and methodology. Propose rectification and/or refinement deemed most appropriate
- Maintain questionnaires in the corporate data collection tool, to be up-to-date and ready for deployment at any time
- Assist COs in the MSA’s data analytics including the visualization and interpretation of collected data
- Lead brainstorming sessions to discuss potential MDA’s and propose to CO’s
- Develop or improve guidance and tool required for the MSA
- Deploy the CO's to support the set up and implementation of MSA and MDA's including those delivered through Social Protection Programmes. Provide remote support when required.
- Advise CO’s during their MSA planning stage in respect of defined steps in the guidance. Ensure allocated teams, schedule, logistics arrangement are accurately designed
- Conduct or coordinate with CO’s to conduct the desk research and assist CO’s in the preliminary analysis, prior to the MSA data collection.
- Assist CO’s in developing and maintaining a realistic detailed project(s) workplan. Monitor and report the key deliverables.
- Assist CO’s in coordinating with field staff, local government, NGOs, UN agencies to set up, implement and monitor the MSA and/or MDA’s.
- Arrange daily debriefs at the end of data collection to discuss and alert the team members on any important observation points during the process. Process adjustments as required.
3. Act as a focal person to work cross-functionally with other units on the related topics such as the value chain analysis.
4. Deploy to support an emergency in the Retail and Markets areas when required.
5. Carry out any other relevant duty assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
A university degree obtained from a recognized education institution in any of the following areas: Development Studies, Economics, Agribusiness, Business
Management, Finance Management, Supply Chain or any related areas;
Experience:
Minimum 3 years professional experience in WFP/humanitarian organization or in retail, distribution and/or manufacture
Experience in retail/market related data processing and analysis
Knowledge and Skills:
- SQL knowledge/experience, Data Base management systems, Business Intelligence reporting systems, software-coding knowledge
- Experience working in a multicultural environment
- Self-driven and very strong organizational and planning abilities.
- Strong conceptual thinking to develop new strategies & innovative solutions.
- Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Able to interact with a broad range of stakeholders and external audience with maturity and tact.
- Excellent communication/presentation skills, with the ability to write strategy documents, to develop business plans and to write and deliver presentations.
- Collaborative spirit, able to partner with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.
- Previous experience with WFP is considered an advantage
Language:
