UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Supply unit at UNHCR Beijing.

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Organizational context

For over 70 years, UNHCR has helped millions of people to restart their lives. They include refugees, returnees, stateless people, the internally displaced and asylum-seekers. Its interventions in the areas of protection, shelter, health and education have been crucial, healing broken pasts and building brighter futures.

UNHCR has been providing protection and emergency assistance to people displaced in humanitarian crises around the world. Many people forced to flee leave with little or nothing from their homes. To meet the needs and relieve suffering, UNHCR procures a wide range of humanitarian and life-saving supplies, including tents, plastic sheets, solar lamps, medical supplies, fuel and generators. UNHCR is among the top buyer globally every year among UN agencies of these emergency items as well as contract services from suppliers and manufacturers. The annual average procurement amount by UNHCR is around US$ 1.4 billion.

The UNHCR Office in China was established in 1979. While building public awareness on refugee issues, UNHCR Beijing has been collaborating with public and private partners to increase the awareness by local business on UNHCR procurement policies and procedures and aim to enhance the partnerships with China market.

UNHCR will continue to endeavour working with all stakeholders in China to ensure persons of concern receive adequate protection and assistance as well as to seek durable solutions for refugees.

The position

The aim of the internship is to provide professional experience in an international organization which is related to and supplements studies or interests in the field of supply;

The internship provides an opportunity to work in a multi-cultural intergovernmental organization;

The internship program is not connected with the recruitment process; nevertheless, UNHCR is willing to provide reference and a fair performance evaluation of the internship for his/her contribution to UNHCR’s work.

The intern will work directly with the UNHCR China office, under guidance and supervision of the Assistant Supply Officer, and to work with the senior government liaison officer, government liaison associate, and other colleagues in respective units.

Duties and responsibilities

• Assist in preparing for supply/procurement related events, includes drafting of presentations, liaising with organizers on logistics issues, setting up meetings with partners/suppliers where applicable, etc.; • Assist in Cloud ERP (UNHCR’s operating system for finance, procurement and supply) training on Supply modules for China office; • Working with related colleague on developing of e-Catalogue project, which should include market research and consolidating of information for made-in-China products that might be of potential interest and applicable to UNHCR operations globally; • Assist Government Liaison unit in event management when required; • Undertaking other duties as required by the supervisor.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and

• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Desirable qualifications and skills

• Completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in supply chain management, logistics, international business/trade, administration, etc.; • Strong interests in international humanitarian field and eager to learn; • Good communication skills; • Professional and detail-oriented at work with team spirits; • Strong awareness of cultural diversity and confidentiality requirements; • Respect for humanity and a commitment to international public service; • Fluent in English, proficiency in other languages i.e. French or Arabic is a plus; • Firm commitment to a long-term full-time internship.

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the Supply and Government Liaison team in UNHCR Representation in China, 1-2-1, Ta Yuan Diplomatic Office Building, 14 Liangmahe Nan Lu, Beijing, China.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.Standard Job Description
