Job Description

Background:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

Internship Overview:

R&P stands for Reception and Placement; it is the resettlement program that all refugees receive from the federal government (PRM). IRC is one of the resettlement agencies that issues the R&P funds and completes the R&P services on behalf of the US govt. There are a number of services that IRC is required to provide, including airport pickup, housing, employment, documentation, school enrollment, cultural orientation, public transportation orientation, and much more. All of these services must be completed within 90 days of a client's arrival.

Matching Grant (MG) is an employment/self-sufficiency program funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. It supports clients for up to 8 months from their arrival to the US with financial assistance, including housing and pocket cash, and job search assistance. Clients receive intensive case management from their IRC caseworker at this time as well. They are required to apply for jobs and attend IRC sponsored employment events, such as job readiness training. The goal of the program is for the clients to gain independence and self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities:

The R&P Intern assists caseworkers as they guide clients through their initial resettlement period in the US. • Interns will support the completion of the R&P core services, services that IRC is contractually obligated to fulfill within a client's initial 90 days in the US. Some of these services include filing benefits applications, school enrollment, public transportation orientations, scheduling client health appointments, changing client primary care providers, assisting with documentation and filing, and other assistance when necessary. • Other duties as assigned.
