UNMISS was established in 2011 under the auspices of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO); subsequently, UNMISS mandate has been renewed through resolutions 2057 (2012), 2109 (2013), 2155 (2014), 2187 (2014), 2223 (2015), 2241 (Dec. 2015), 2304 (2016) and 2327 (2016), 2392 (Dec. 2017), 2406 (Mar. 2018), 2459 (Mar. 2019), 2514 (Mar. 2020), 2567 (Mar. 2021), 2625 (Mar. 2022).

Under the direct supervision of the Broadcast Technology Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Install, operate and maintain broadcast and production studios and related equipment. • Provide support for live Outdoor broadcasts or production related works using the Outside Broadcasting (OB) Vehicle. • Maintain and repair necessary studio and studio-linked technical equipment to optimize the technical operational requirements for the radio. • Operate and maintain the studio broadcast systems using automation and pro-duction software • Improve the efficiency of the workflow and the overall setup of the facilities. • Provide input for equipment needs and budget preparation. • Assist the Supervisor in other activities. • Should be on standby 24/7 for any emergencies. • Will be expected to perform other functions as required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote capacity development activities and transfer of skills to national personnel during the assignment; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The planning, implementation and management of radio broadcast and production studios, FM transmitters, satellite uplink, downlink and Studio-transmitter link (STL) system. Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word etc) and other IT applications and office technology equipment. Knowledge of AoIP - required RCS radio systems such as Zetta and GSelector - required Studer, Wheatstone Wheatnet, Telos Axia - desired Comrex family of Audio-over-IP codecs – Bric Link, Access NX Portable, Access Multi-Rack - desired Telos Vx Engine talk show phone systems - desired Experience with software such as: Adobe Audition, Logic Pro, Cubase, Avid Protools Familiar with Dante, AES-67, SMPTE 2110-30 Digital audio protocols - required Experience with Windows Operating Systems, Remote Access Applications (VNC, Remote Desktop, etc.), network technologies, systems security, Cloud technologies, and network monitoring tools.

Living conditions vary between UNMISS duty stations. Each duty station where UNMISS has a field presence has basic residential camp facilities, which includes running water and electricity. Candidates should be aware that accommodation is austere and there may be the possibility of water shortages and power blackouts. As the accommodation situation improves single unit accommodation, with an attached ablution, should become available in all locations.

All UNMISS duty stations apart from Entebbe, Uganda are considered non - family duty stations. The security level of UNMISS duty stations is classified by the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) who will brief on arrival. Several locations in South Sudan are prone to conflict.

Some degree of medical service is provided in all UNMISS duty stations. The climate is tropical with a rainy season in many areas that spans from April to October. Ability to live and work in difficult and harsh conditions is essential.
