Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Programme Manager and Communication Specialist, the incumbent is responsible for assisting UNDP staff in all aspects of the management of UNDP programme within the thematic/sectoral areas assigned. The incumbent supports the implementation of programme and communication activities as directed by the programme manager/communication specialist.

The Student Intern supports and helps coordinate activities of the projects’ staff. S/he works in close collaboration with the operations team, programme staff in other UN Agencies, UNDP HQs staff and Government officials, technical advisors and experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UNDP programme implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Contribute to the implementation of project and programme activities;
  • Contribute to the partnerships and implementation of a resource mobilization strategy;
  • Provision of quality communication support to project and programme staff.

Implementation of project and programme activities focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Contributes to the analysis and research of CO documents and frameworks;
  • Contributes to the identification of areas for support and interventions within the thematic/sectoral areas assigned;
  • Contributes to the effective application of RBM tools, establishment of management targets and monitoring achievement of results.

Strategic partnerships and implementation of the resource mobilization strategy focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Supports the development of partnerships with the UN Agencies, IFI’s, government institutions, bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, private sector, civil society in the specific thematic areas based on strategic goals of UNDP, country needs and donors’ priorities;
  • Supports the analysis and research of information on donors, preparation of substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation, identification of opportunities for initiation of new projects, active contribution to the overall office effort in resource mobilization;
  • Provision of quality communication support to project and programme staff;
  • Supports the the creation of Monthly Bulletin, website and social media content and strategy;
  • Supports the identification of sources of information related to policy-driven issues. Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learnt directly linked to programme country policy goals;
  • Supports the contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a Masters degree or equivalent under way in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field, or
  • Currently in the final year of a Bachelors degree; or
  • Have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

Experience:

  • 1 year of relevant experience at the national or international level with an NGO, private sector, or government is desirable;
  • Experience in the usage of computers, office software packages, social media and communications/publishing platforms.
  • Experience in handling of web-based management systems.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in French, and English is an asset.

Conditions:

As of 1 January 2020, Interns may be given a stipend according to UNDP Internship Policy, if it is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government foundation or scholarship programme. A stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.

Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of the internship. UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. Interns must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.

The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.

Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

The intern will be evaluated at the end of the contract.
