Org. Setting and Reporting This post is located in the General Maintenance Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the Foreperson of the General Maintenance Shop under the supervision of the General Foreperson of the Unit. The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Shop Foreperson and the supervision of the General Foreperson of the Unit, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties: - Maintains and constructs metal and sheetrock (dry wall) partitions for offices and other space, floor tiles, including all masonry works and assembles furniture and shelving units throughout the United Nations complex and off-site leased premises. - Performs as a lead person by distributing work assignments on the job site and supervises staff under him during shift operations, including the evening and weekends. - On occasion, assembles and dismantles stages for UN special events or scaffolding for maintenance of projects and transports materials to job sites. - Assists in general upkeep and maintenance of the Secretary General's Residence, including demolition and renovation work. - Follows safe work practices and observes safety precautions. In the absence of the Foreperson, the Lead person, assumes the responsibility of the Foreperson of the Shop. - Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisors.

Competencies Professionalism: Demonstrates professional competencies in the general maintenance and related trades; Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of general maintenance works; knowledge of the trade's technical language and proficiency in the use of all hand and power tools pertaining to the trade and its relevant safety procedures; Ability to read and understand blue prints and rough drawings; Ability to supervise and lead a team. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.

Planning and organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honors commitments. Delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards. Operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules. Supports subordinates, provides oversight and takes responsibility for delegated assignments. Takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.

Education High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressive work experience in the area of general building construction and maintenance services, including the use of tools and equipment for this trade is required.

Experience in construction of sheetrock (dry wall), double wall, metal and metal/glass partitions, floor tiles, masonry, installation of doors and assembly of systems furniture is required.

Proficiency in all aspects of the paint trade is desirable

Experience as supervisor is desirable

Experience in processing work orders through an automated Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
