Background Information - UNOPS Hub in Amman The UNOPS Hub in Amman implements projects in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Yemen, in partnership with bilateral donors, national governments, and other UN agencies. With an established presence across the region, the office runs operations including large-scale procurement, project development, and technical management, and provides financial, human resources, and infrastructure-related services. The functional objective of UNOPS Hub in Amman is to deliver its projects in an efficient and effective manner and in line with the principles, rules and regulations of UNOPS, in order to support the response to the current needs and national priorities in the region.

Functional Responsibilities

The Structural Design Engineer shall work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager or the Hub Infrastructure Advisor. The Structural Design Engineer will give his/her technical expertise as required to manage and coordinate any designs assigned, supervision, commissioning and related documentation works. He/she will be working with project teams ensuring high quality design documentation and site works are carried out on time and on or under budget. The tasks would involve the following but not limited to: - Design of the Structural components and services of projects; - Assist contract division in preparing and evaluation of tender documents of structural components (specifications, codes, BOQs, rates etc.) ; - Contribute to the design of the structural component including systemic drawings, calculations, reports and scope of works; - Review the design of structural components of projects; - Contribute to the implementation phase by following up and monitoring different relevant tasks including testing, coding and details of structural deliverables to clients.

Specifically, the Structural Design Engineer will be responsible for the following substantive tasks:

Technical tasks: - Prepare/Review design briefs and the design reports that address specific clients and stakeholder requirements and specifications as and when necessary. - Prepare/Review the design documentation, calculations, specifications, bar bending schedules and other project documents to meet the required quality and detailing. - Work closely with Project Managers, Architects, Engineers, Draftsperson and Quantity Surveyors in the planning of projects, scheduling of tasks and developing an integrated design. - Review and ensure the documents prepared meets the quality standard requirements. - Review/ Carry out structural design of services according to the client’s design requirement and as per applicable international standards and codes of practices. - Strong ability in producing and reviewing structural bill of quantities. - Support the project team in managing and monitoring delivery of services design documents. Highlight possible late delivery prior to the event. - Carry out structural site inspections, assessments and reports as required. - Assist in the development of specifications, procedures and quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) protocols when required. - Proactively manage the design/review projects, ensuring that they meet the high standards expected by UNOPS, while delivering the program within its time and budget constraints. - Liaise with national and international clients and address requirements when required. - Coordinate the works and submissions with all other disciplines - Architectural and Design Engineers and Quantity Surveyors. - Carry out research and identify appropriate technologies/techniques/designs that can be incorporated in the project design. - Carry out technical reviews as appropriate. - Co-ordinate the team effort to complete any task as would be required and appropriate if assigned.

Administrative tasks: - Assist in managing the structural design and engineering related material archiving. - Assist in scheduling requested tasks related to structural works. - Perform any other tasks relevant to the Infrastructure and Engineering Unit when required.

Final Product - Deliver delegated tasks by the supervisor on time and as per the required cost and quality parameters. - Ensure project design and construction quality is high observing local and UN standards applicable and relevant health and safety procedures are adhered to.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education: - Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering is required. - Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering is desired. - Project Management Certificates will be an asset - Membership of the Jordanian Engineers Association is mandatory.

Experience: - A minimum of 4 years of practical civil engineering and related experience is required. - Membership to Professional Engineer’s list from a recognized engineering body/institution is required. - Experience working with UN or other Humanitarian/Development agencies is desired. - Demonstrated computer ability in using MS Office Suite and structural analysis and engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, MathCAD, PLS-CADD, StaadPro, ETABS, SAP2000, PROKON, etc. is an asset.

Language Requirements: - Full proficiency in Arabic and English is required.
