Result of Service In fulfilling the responsibilities specified above, the individual contractor will deliver the following main outputs:

  • Monthly reports detailing communications and outreach activities carried out in the lead up to the UN 2023 Water Conference including:
  • Number of media plans developed and approved;
  • Number of coordination meetings, outcomes and follow up;
  • Details of communication activities and campaigns implemented;
  • Impact of outreach efforts;
  • Other outputs as required.
  • For the last monthly report, the individual contractor should provide an analysis of lessons learned, including summary of key activities and recommendations to improve communications and outreach processes related to intergovernmental events.

    Work Location The individual contractor will work on/off UNHQ premises.

    Expected duration The contract will be for six months.

    Duties and Responsibilities On 20 December 2018 the General Assembly adopted the resolution on the “Midterm comprehensive review of the implementation of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ 2018-2028”. (A/RES/73/226).

The resolution calls for a Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action to be convened in New York from 22 to 24 March 2023. The Conference shall be preceded by regional and global preparatory meetings, as appropriate, and informed by existing water-related meetings at the regional and global level.

On 21 December 2020, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution A/RES/75/212 “United Nations Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the¿Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, “Water for¿Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028”, which provides the modalities of the Conference. The Government of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands will co-host the Conference.

The objective of the contract is to assist in the development and coordination of various communications products for the 2023 UN Water Conference and to support the UNDESA Division for Sustainable Development Goals’ efforts, in collaboration with the UN Department of Global Communications and the Strategic Planning and Communications Unit of UNDESA, UN-Water and other partners, to coordinate the development and production of content related to a variety of communication materials. The individual contractor will also assist with overall digital outreach and communication to generate interest in the 2023 UN Water Conference.

Work assignment

The individual contractor’s main responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Develop and disseminate communications materials, ensure engaging content, coordination with key partners, and timely dissemination and amplification via internal and external communications channels;
  • Carry out outreach and communications tasks related to the 2023 UN Water Conference, multi-stakeholder dialogues, and other related events and outcomes;
  • Coordinate and arrange multimedia coverage and other media outreach efforts with the communications focal points from the Co-Hosts, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), and the UN Department of Global Communications (UNDGC) and UN-Water;
  • Arrange monthly teleconferences or e-meetings with the communication focal points of the co-hosts to discuss media and advocacy related activities;
  • Organize social media campaigns to generate interest in the 2023 UN Water Conference, coordinate social media coverage and video interviews leading up to and during the 2023 UN Water Conference;
  • Develop and distribute social media packages to key partners, monitor/report on implementation and impact of the social media campaign each month;
  • Act as focal point in all internal and external meetings and events related to public information and communications related to the 2023 UN Water Conference;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree) in advocacy, communications, media studies, journalism or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: - A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development and public information, with demonstrated proven track record in communications, media production, journalism or related area. - The individual contractor must possess demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of communication strategies for high-profile international meetings, and experience in working with communication and media partners from international organizations, governmental officials, academia / professional bodies, the private sector, donor/philanthropic bodies and civil society in the organization. - Proven experience in developing communications materials, including for social medial platforms. - Experience working in the water sector with knowledge of the field is highly desirable.

Language: - Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job posting, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN Language is an advantage.

Additional Information The individual contractor will be paid in line with the fee range of a Level B individual contractor as per ST/AI/2013/4. The exact fee will be determined based on the expertise of the individual contractor as indicated in the Personal History Profile. Payment will be made on a monthly basis upon certification of successful completion of the respective assignments as per below performance indicators.
