You have:

  • A first-level university degree in Communications, Journalism, or Public Information is required.
  • A minimum of six (6) months of progressively responsible experience in communication, preferably in an international organization.
  • Experience crafting newsletters, news stories, and press releases is required.
  • Experience in writing for social media is required.
  • Graphic design skills would be an asset.
  • Knowledge about the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is useful.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN Language is an advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities At the 2019 SDG Summit, the Secretary-General issued a global call for a new Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs by 2030. He identified three essential areas to drive this call: global action, including greater leadership, major surge in resources and financing and focus on solutions that will make greatest impact across the entire Agenda; local action with orienting domestic policies and action with the 2030 Agenda; and people action including by youth, civil society, the media, the private sector, unions, academia and other stakeholders, to generate an unstoppable movement pushing for the required transformations.

In 2023, DESA/DSDG is supporting several high-level intergovernmental processes and events that will shine the spotlight on different SDGs and thus contribute to the Decade of Action. These include the 2023 STI Forum, a number of high-level gatherings in connection with the annual High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in July, and the second 2023 SDG Summit - the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the General Assembly in September, including the launch of the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR).

In addition, to support the Decade of Action and inspire the engagement of all stakeholders around SDG implementation, DESA/DSDG has created a number of online tools and platforms to collect and share information about SDG efforts by governments and stakeholders around the world. These include an online SDG Acceleration Actions platform, with over 200 inspiring new SDG actions; and an SDG Good Practices database with over 500 SDG-related good practices from governments and other stakeholders around the world.

The purpose of the individual contract is to support communications and outreach activities of DESA/DSDG in relation to the Decade of Action on the SDGs by creating awareness of the different products, resources and events coordinated by the Division, including the High-Level Political Forum and the 2023 SDG Summit.

Work assignment

Working under the direction of the Chief of the Outreach and Partnerships Branch, the individual contractor will carry out the following tasks: - Promote, through social media accounts, the DSDG’s efforts around the Decade of Action and the high-profile events coordinated by the Division, including the launch of the 2023 GSDR, the 2023 STI Forum, events to be organized in connection with the annual HLPF in July, the high-level week of the General Assembly in September and others: at least one post/day advertising webinars, live-tweet events, highlight of published reports etc. through each social media account including Twitter (@SustDev), Facebook ( www.facebook.com/sustdev ).

  • Support with outreach efforts for the series of Special Events organized by DSDG during the 2023 High-level Political Forum (HLPF); prepare and launch related outreach materials.

  • Support with outreach efforts around the 2023 SDG Summit, organized by OISC - the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the General Assembly

  • Capitalizing on DSDG’s wide social media reach (the Division’s twitter account @SustDev has over 230K followers), widely publicize and promote the SDG-related work undertaken by the Division, such as the 2023 GSDR, the online SDG Acceleration Actions and SDG Good Practices databases, during the HLPF and the General Assembly high-level week.

  • Draft issues of related newsletters, including the periodic Ocean Action Newsletter and materials and promote them via media channels Twitter and Facebook.

  • Support outreach activities for online and offline events by designing flyers; posting on social media outlets prior to events; live tweeting during events, etc.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills - A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in Communications, Journalism, and Public Information is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience in the field of media and communications may be accepted.

  • A minimum of six (6) months of progressively responsible experience on communication preferably in an international organization, is desirable.

  • The individual contractor is expected to possess experience crafting newsletters, news stories, press releases. Experience in writing for social media is required. Graphic design skills would be an asset. Knowledge about the SDGs, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations also would be useful. Candidates based in New York would be preferred, but candidates working remotely will be considered.

    Languages - Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN Language is an advantage.

    Additional Information The consultant will be paid in line with the fee range of a Level A consultant as per ST/AI/2013/4. The exact fee will be determined based on the expertise of the consultant as indicated in the Personal History Profile. Payment will be made on a monthly basis upon certification of successful completion of the respective assignments as per below performance indicators.
