The Position:

The Regional Strategic Information Specialist post is located in the East and Southern Africa Regional Office of UNFPA located in Johannesburg. The post is under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and Deputy Regional Director with direct supervision by the Head of the Middle Income Country Technical Hub in the regional office. The UNFPA Middle-Income Country Technical Hub, based in the regional office , works to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of tailored technical expertise and modular support provided to an increasingly number of Country Offices located in middle-income countries in Southern Africa, namely. Botswana, Eswatini, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, and South Africa, with the intention to expand support to transitioning MICs in the region.

S/he will play a critical role in strengthening the generation and use of strategic information to guide decision making in the MICs required to advance the ICPD Programme of Action and achieve the Transformative results committed by UNFPA and its partners. This includes population data, demographic intelligence, socio-economic data to mention a few.

Job Purpose:

The Strategic Information Specialist is a member of the MIC Technical Expert Hub, and will report to the Head of the MIC Technical Hub. S/He is part of a multi-disciplinary team, which provides technical, policy, programme support and guidance to selected middle-income countries in an integrated and coordinated manner. Under the overall guidance of the ESARO Senior Management Team and in close collaboration with the respective Management teams of the middle income country offices.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

Advanced university degree/ Master's or Equivalent in demography, statistics, population studies, economics, social science or other field directly related to the substantive areas of this position

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 7 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the substantive area, of demography, statistics, population studies, economics with minimum 3 years at International level
  • Proven quantitative and qualitative data research, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated experience to manage high volume work flow and ability to maintain productive working relationships with a wide network of partners and stakeholders.
  • Ability to conceptualize and to integrate knowledge with broader strategic, policy and operational objectives;
  • Excellent communication, and managerial skills.
  • Experience in programme/ project management including experience in large multi-sector programmes;
  • Field experience is essential.

Languages:

Fluent in English, working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese is an asset.
